Wild Alaska Tour: Full-Day Scenic Journey from Fairbanks

Description
Travel beyond the usual Alaska visitor routes on a full-day journey into one of the state’s greatest road-accessible wilderness corridors. This is not a Denali National Park tour and does not enter the park. Instead, it follows the remote Denali Highway, far from the park crowds and into the open country most visitors never reach. Featured by National Geographic among the world’s great drives, the Denali Highway offers a rare chance to experience Alaska’s untamed wilderness from relative comfort, with tundra, braided rivers, glacial valleys, distant glaciers, and sweeping views toward the Alaska Range. Frequent photo stops and short walks immerse you in the landscape, while your guide connects the scenery to Alaska’s history, geology, wildlife, plant life, regional geography, and Interior life today. This is a long full-day experience, including 135 miles on maintained gravel. Guests must be 15 or older. Groups are limited to just 6 guests for a more comfortable, relaxed experience.

Itinerary
Depart Fairbanks in the morning and head south into Alaska's Interior. As the city gives way to forest, rivers, and distant mountain ranges, your guide introduces the landscapes, history, and geography that will shape the day ahead.
Travel south along one of Alaska's most scenic highways, passing through broad river valleys and boreal forest on the approach to the Denali region.
Near Cantwell, stop at McKinley Creekside Café before beginning the remote Denali Highway. Guests may purchase coffee, house-made pastries, a quick snack, or a meal to go for later in the day. This stop marks the transition from Alaska’s main highway system into one of the state’s most scenic and lightly traveled wilderness roads.
Spend the heart of the day exploring the legendary Denali Highway, one of Alaska's most scenic wilderness roads. Travel through sweeping tundra, glacial valleys, mountain passes, lakes, rivers, and vast stretches of undeveloped country far from the typical visitor route. Throughout the day, make frequent scenic stops for photography, wildlife viewing opportunities, and short walks, including panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Alaska Range, glacial landscapes, and elevated tundra terrain. Depending on conditions, guests may also have opportunities to walk short distances along scenic ridges, eskers, and higher viewpoints to experience the landscape on foot. Pause for a meal at Tangle Lakes Lodge, a remote roadhouse set along the Tangle Lakes deep in the Denali Highway wilderness. Surrounded by lakes, tundra, and mountain scenery, this is a chance to relax, enjoy a meal, and take in the setting before continuing east toward Paxson.
At the eastern end of the Denali Highway, reconnect with the Richardson Highway and continue north through the Alaska Range foothills. The surrounding landscape transitions from open tundra and lakes to broad valleys shaped by glaciers and rivers.
Brief stop for restrooms, refreshments, and supplies before continuing north toward Fairbanks. Depending on conditions, there may also be views of the eastern Alaska Range and surrounding Interior landscapes.
Continue north toward Fairbanks with restroom breaks, comfort stops, and occasional scenic viewpoints as conditions and timing allow. Your guide will continue sharing context along the way as the route returns through Interior Alaska’s river valleys, forest, and open northern landscapes.

Great tour through a beautiful and very remote part of Alaska. We saw forest, countless lakes, mountain peaks, glaciers and even an active volcano. Ron also shared a lot of interesting Alaska history along the way. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a unique Alaska experience .
Absolutely stunning ride through the interior from Fairbanks. The scenery was breath taking and our guide well informed and very prepared.
This trip exceeded our expectations! Ron, the guide/driver, is extremely knowledgeable of the landscape, foliage, wildlife and history of this area if Alaska. He kept us entertained the entire trip and made it go by extremely fast! Ron’s van was very clean and comfortable. It still has the “new car” smell. He accommodated us with hot tea, coffee and a variety of other drinks and snacks. I also loved that he used a PA system in the vehicle. We had a small group of 4 but we spread out so we all could take excellent pictures. You could hear him from any seat. Ron has thought out everything so you have the best experience!
This tour is a great way to experience the beauty and scale of Interior Alaska. I particularly enjoyed that the tour follows a loop route, which gave me a real sense of just how vast the landscape is. The scenery was constantly changing throughout the day, and we were fortunate enough to see plenty of wildlife along the way. It made for a memorable trip! Ron was a fantastic guide. He made the drive look easy and shared lots of interesting information about the region and its history. I'd highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to experience some of Alaska's most breathtaking scenery.
