The Udawalawe Dam is a large irrigation dam in Udawalawe, in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. The dam consists of an embankment section and a gravity section, combining the total dam length to approximately 3.9 km (2.4 mi). The dam is also used for hydroelectric power generation, powering two 2 MW units, commissioned in April 1969. The water level of the reservoir is controlled by the five tainter gate spillways located at the eastern end of the dam, with two additional spillways located towards the centre of the dam. The reservoir measures approximately 8.6 km (5.3 mi) in length, with a maximum perpendicular width of 7 km (4.3 mi).

Highly recommended

For our safari in Udawalawe National Park, we searched for a suitable provider through Expedia. Due to the many positive reviews, we chose Udawalawe National Park Safari – and that was definitely the right decision. Our driver Gimhana was just great. He picked us up on time at the hotel, was very friendly, spoke good English and gave us a lot of interesting information both inside and outside the park. Although we had only booked a driver and no additional guide, he virtually took on this role and did an excellent job. During the safari he was very attentive, showed us many animals and also responded to our wishes. He even asked us in advance which animals we would particularly like to see. For us, the focus was simply to experience as much of the wildlife as possible – especially elephants. And we were not disappointed: We have seen almost all the animals we had hoped for. Leopards are known to be hard to spot, but even here Gimhana had a good sense: He showed us relatively fresh leopard tracks in the sand, which made it clear that these animals were very close. Another highlight was that we were even able to get out of the vehicle in a safe place and have a look at the surroundings – of course always under his mindful assessment of the situation. Overall, it was an all-round successful safari experience. We can absolutely recommend Gimhana and Udawalawe National Park Safari!

Gimhana was a really good Safariguide. He was flexible with the organization and always a fast answer. He knew a lot about the animals and where to Drive to See the different animals.
