We will go to your hotel in San Miguel de Allende to pick you up to start our journey to Dolores Hidalgo, who inherited the craft of Talavera pottery and ceramics that today enjoys great prestige, as well as the unusual flavors of the snows of this place. Atotonilco is known as the Mexican Sistine Chapel for all the pictorial art contained within this beautiful Sanctuary. At the end of the tour, we will take you back to your Hotel.

Atotonilco, a small town with less than 600 inhabitants and whose name means place of hot water, is about 14 kilometers from San Miguel de Allende and just over 30 kilometers from Dolores Hidalgo, two cities that played a leading role in Mexican independence. Its proximity to these two municipalities, key on the Independence Route, allowed Atotonilco to also have a leading role. reason why you should visit Atotonilco: the Jesús Nazareno Sanctuary and its House of Spiritual Exercises, whose construction began in 1740 – under the supervision of the priest Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro.
This baroque temple, officially known as the Sanctuary of God and the Country, is visited every year by thousands of faithful Christians, but also by many art lovers who want to admire closely the pictorial works that decorate the walls and ceilings of its main nave. and of the seven adjoining chapels. There is not a single free space and that is why there are those who dare to call this Sanctuary the Mexican "Sistine Chapel". Its apparent exterior simplicity does not allow to guess the artistic treasures that it protects in its interior, work of the artists Miguel Antonio Martínez de Pocasangre, José María Barajas and Juan Rodríguez Juárez.

Stay open to unscheduled opportunities- Alfredo was very knowledgeable and we were able to experience e things we might not have otherwise
We really enjoyed this tour of Atotonilco and Dolores Hidalgo. If you are in the San Miguel area don’t miss the opportunity to see these interesting small towns. The Sanctuary of Jesus of Nazarene in Atotonilco is truly incredible. Victor was our guide and he is very friendly and knowledgeable. He has been a professional guide for over 20 years. We appreciated that he was flexible about when and where to have lunch. He also went out of his way to drive us to a specialty store when we needed to buy something. Like other reviewers, we noted the whole tour was five hours, not six, from pickup to drop off.
Our guide, Hector was great! Very informative. He was very attentive to our every need. We got the best ice cream in Dolores Hidalgo.
This was an excellent experience and ended up being just me and my mom on the tour. Atotonilco was a quaint little town and our guide Hector was very knowledgeable about the history of the area. Unfortunately the “Sistine Chapel” is closed on Mondays but the church is really lovely. A particular highlight was visiting a Talavera factory for a private tour of their process; we loved seeing these colorful pieces come to life at the hands of these skilled artisans! Also, we enjoyed seeing Dolores Hidalgo and learning more about the Mexican revolution. All in all, a very interesting and worthwhile tour. Thank you Hector for showing us around and sharing so much of your knowledge about Guanajuato!

Our tour guide Hector was amazing. His English was very good and he gave us interesting historical information about Dolores Hidalgo and Antotonilco. He took us to great shops and the best food of our trip. He also took us to a very interesting shop in Dolores Hidalgo to show us the pottery making process but they make the Catrina statues instead of just bowls (everyone in our group of 7 bought something). We did have a few issues with scheduling with the tour company and they sent us the wrong tour information/pick up information and we had to contact them the morning of to get it changed. We also booked a 6 hour tour but only booked our guide for 5 hours, so the company wanted to charge us for the extra hour when we wanted to go to lunch at the restaurant our guide recommended and would be over 5 hours. We did talk to them on the phone and realized their mistake and did not charge us, so I do give them credit for this, but it was not a smooth process. The trip locations and experience was well worth the headache but needs better coordination from the company.

Through no fault of our very competent driver and guide, the church in Atotonilco was changing priests and while the entire town was out for this big celebration, the church was closed, hence we missed half of the tour. Also, the road between SMA & Dolores Hidalgo is being widened so we slowly drove on bumpy roads for much of the trip.
Unfortunately, there are situations beyond our control that are not predictable, such as the cases you mention. We hope that your next experience will be more positive.
Francisco was an excellent tour guide. Very informative and kind! We just had the Best experience! He was on time to pick us up and the car ride was comfortable and he knew a lot of Mexican history. Will definitely book with him again for future travel.

This was a pleasant tour with a very nice guide. We ate lunch at the mercado, which was fun. Interesting history of the Mexican independence. Ice cream was fun on the plaza. All around a good day.

Delores Hildago was very interesting and fun. We spent time in the market, sampled some delicious food, and learned about the history of the town. Our guide was very knowledgeable. We enjoyed shopping on the street of ceramics too. Atotonilco was quite special. The painted interior is stunning!
