The Casa Grotta is the typical house of the Sassi built partially by digging into the rock and partially built. In the Casa Grotta del Casalnuovo you can experience a real house of the Sassi through its original furniture and the tools of daily use that the family that lived there used in everyday life until 1958. It is a real ethnographic collection, a small museum with objects of common use and work from the times when the Sassi were inhabited, before the depopulation that occurred in the fifties. Inside, the original rooms and furnishings of the house are reconstructed before the ancient districts were depopulated in the late 1950s.

The church of the Madonna delle Grazie is located in Via del Sasso Caveoso. The church, still open to the public, was formerly named after St. Eustace, as can be seen from the pastoral visit of Msgr. Saracen in 1543 - 1544. The entrance consists DA a bell tower. Behind the altar we find a rock wall with several openings that lead to the sacristy; once there was the chancel. In the ceiling there are two carved domes and visible apse arches. On the right wall there is a Crucifixion, now ruined, under which there is a faded fresco. The figure of Christ is accompanied DA two angels and at the foot of it are: the Mother and John. On another wall is represented St. Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata. In the ceiling area behind the altar, coffered panels with ornamental motifs are depicted. The corresponding wall, however, shows a painting of Saint Lucia.

First time in Matera

It was our first time visiting Matera. A stunning city with a history of millennia. We chose the tour by instinct from the various proposals found online, but right from the start, we noticed how Teresa had such a capacity to tell the story of the city that you almost felt present in those moments. The description of the Sassi of Matera (ours was the Sasso Caveoso district) was fantastic, covering the lives of the people, their changes in the mid-50s, how Matera was perceived at the time, and how it has evolved in the following years. When we said goodbye at the end of the tour, with Matera now adorned by the evening lights, we were almost sad about the end of that journey, which we had come to experience as a story.....in the first person. A sincere thank you to Teresa for the storytelling and the time spent with us and the other people in the group.
