The first Marunouchi Building was built in 1923 and repaired after the Great Kanto Earthquake. It was demolished in 1999 due to low earthquake resistance, and the modern 36‑story version you see today opened in 2002.
KITTE is home to many shops, and its rooftop “KITTE Garden” offers an excellent view of Tokyo Station. On the 4th floor, a recreated postal workspace lets you experience a bit of old Japan.
Mitsubishi Ichigokan was designed by Josiah Conder, the Meiji‑era architect behind landmarks such as the Rokumeikan, Nicolai Hall, and the Furukawa Residence. Completed in 1894, the building now features a beautiful courtyard that serves as a relaxing public space.
It is regarded as an important example of early Western‑style architecture in Japan, and it became the first Showa‑period building to be recognized as a National Important Cultural Property.
The stone and iron “double bridge” seen today was built in the late 1880s, replacing the simple wooden bridge that stood in the Edo period.
Sakuradamon is the west gate of the former Edo Castle and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. The current gate structure dates back to around 1663.
