This was such an amazing tour! It is perfect if you don’t have a lot of time in Tokyo but want to see it all, or even if you want to get your bearings and decide where you want to go back to later. Yasko was amazing and we ended up being the only two people on the tour so she tailored it to our interests and took us to some excellent spots!
I give this tour 5 stars for what it is - a great fast-paced tour that give you a little bit of a lot! First things first, please be sure to wear comfortable shoes and prepared to do a lot of walking! If you are not fit to do so, I do not recommend this tour, consider a private car or bus tour. Sam our tour guide, was great! So friendly and knowledgeable. You will learn quite a bit about Japanese culture along the way and he does a great job of explaining the sites and what they mean. You will learn to navigate the subway system which is worth its weight in gold. Consider taking this tour towards the beginning of your trip because the subway is your friend to get around. It could be a little confusing at first but once you get used to it is so much more efficient to get around and cheaper and QUICKER than Uber! TIP: Add the Suica transit card to your smart phone wallet and load it up before you go! I loaded about 3000 yen (about $19.00 USD) and still have about 1800 yen after using for 4 days. Be advised that this is an “express” tour so don't expect a lot of time at each site but I think this is perfect if you want to take in Tokyo in about 7 hours. I also wouldn't call many of the sites "hidden gems" as they were very much touristy but for my 1st time in Tokyo, I was OK with this as I like to take a city all-in during my 1st visit and then return to specific spots for a deep dive if time allows OR take another trip back if I am that intruigued. Sam will tell you when and how to revisit each site with tips and tricks on how to do so. Highly recommend this tour if you don’t mind walking, seeing a lot but want to do so in express mode!
Our tour guide gave us a very comprehensive historic overview of the temples and Shrines and the cultural backgrounds of how it has evolved through history to today. Really enjoyed every minute and learned so much. We enjoyed the market, historic areas and the Temples and Shrines. Thank you Sam -and Viator!
Our guide Sam was fantastic, we had the best time! He took us on trains and subway and made it look easy, we saw a lot that we wouldn't have seen without booking this
Sam was awesome and made the tour lots of fun. It was great seeing a lot of the main sites and learning some history behind them. Excellent tour to do if you are just starting your Tokyo visit. Be prepared with your transit card and comfy shoes.
Although I am a very fit person, I felt this tour was extremely fast-paced (rushed), not allowing enough time to appreciate what we were seeing. I was exhausted at the end of the day, yet lunch was way too relaxed and wasted (IMO) a lot of time (about an hour for 'fast food' on our own.) Had we just picked up a quick bite, we would've had more time at the sights (and perhaps instead enjoyed a Japanese meal *after* the tour concluded in the evening.) The tour guide had interesting observations and I would've liked to hear more. He was quite knowledgable, and I did enjoy meeting him and seeing what I did, however rushed, of his city. Plan on having to get a cab back to your hotel, probably at considerable cost (depending on location), because you won't get much help finding your way back to the hotel! -- that's the primary reason I wouldn't recommend the tour, despite the interesting stops.
If anyone has a few days in Tokyo and wants to see some main sites, at a gentle pace (as long as you're happy walking a fair way), then we would REALLY recommend this tour. Sam was a brilliant guide, taking us at a sensible pace (or guiding us easily through the metro system) in a lovely group of seven on a Sunday (from 4 different countries so a lovely mix of knowledge and experience to share too). Sam took us to main sites but stopped along the way to share history, culture traditions with information at just the right level to help us enjoy the whole day more but NEVER going ott with the info and adding so much value to what we'd ever have been able to glean for ourselves from a guide book. So a huge and genuine thanks Sam.
Great tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and really nice. We saw a lot of cool places like the fish market, and he taught us how to use the subway. The only negative comment I have is that after being on your feet for 3 hours straight, would be nice to offer a chance to sit down for even for 5 minutes. Luckily the subway platform, while we were waiting for the train, had some open seats. Otherwise, you need to be 100% physically fit. There's so much walking for hours on end. At one point I almost offered to pay for Uber since it was a very small group. Luckily, I had already seen the last three places on his list. So, I skipped out early.
Amazing tour. So awesome to have such a great guide. I loved the whole experience. The food was awesome and the vibe was excellent. Would recommend this tour to any one who wants historical Cultural and social experience
Our guide Sam was the best. Very nice and well prepared, with good English. Lots of walking but good way to see lots of places in one day. Thank you Eight One Management and Sam.
