Tokyo Asakusa: Guided Japanese Cabaret Show (Taishu Engeki)

Description
Step into the world of local Japanese entertainment at Asakusa Mokubakan where history, music, and drama come alive on stage. Originally founded in the Meiji era, our theater survived wars and became the last Taishu Engeki theater in Tokyo. Today, it continues its legacy as a beloved home of Taishu Engeki, offering visitors a rare chance to experience a living cultural tradition. Enjoy a show, where artists perform to both traditional and modern music, and wear eyecatching costumes as onnagata (female impersonators). Thrilling sword artistry and playful storytelling, also make the show exciting even if you don’t speak Japanese. With new performances every day, every visit offers something fresh and unforgettable. Whether it’s your first time in Japan or your tenth, the Asakusa Mokubakan promises a unique cultural experience you won’t find anywhere else. We recommend bringing cash if you’d like to take part in the local tradition of tipping performers!

We had a really great time at the show! We went to the 7 PM show. Our guide was super informative before the show started to give us some background to the history of this type of theater. The performance was extremely interactive and energetic. The theater was packed with locals and since the show changes daily, there are many repeat visitors. Seating is a little tight. But there is not a bad seat in the house!
Our “on stage” experience at the Kiryuza Koikawa Gekidan Theater was wonderful and exceeded our expectations. Wearing Kabuki kimonos—and Anita’s special Kabuki make-up—made the experience unforgettable. Performing under the bright lights while learning to use the fan and Japanese sword was truly unique. The theater staff were incredibly supportive, cheering us on as we performed. Our interpreter, Janine, was excellent in assisting Zacho, the Kabuki Master, as he applied Anita’s make-up and taught us the fan and sword. We highly recommend this cultural experience and will treasure it for many years.
It was an amazing experience - getting to know a very colourful piece of Japanese culture. We book through GeYourGuide and our guide Michiko was so attentive and gave us an introduction and lots of explanations about what was happening on the stage. Thank you!
Janine was a wonderful host and guide.
Amazone expérience, had an Amazon guide and the show was excellent, so poetic !!
Wonderful experience, the show was very interesting! The performers are very talented, especially knowing that there are two shows per day. I highly recommend it.
It was my first time seeing this kind of Japanese theater performance and I was absolutely fascinated. The atmosphere was incredible from start to finish. The energy, passion, and enthusiasm of both the performers and the audience made the experience truly special. The actors were highly professional, talented, and captivating on stage. You could feel how much the audience loved and supported them, which created a warm and exciting atmosphere. I can wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone visiting Japan. It was a wonderful cultural experience, great fun and one of the highlights of my trip. I would definitely go again.
This was such a unique, fun experience and I’m so glad I found it! Michiko was amazing and I felt so welcomed, and she did such a good job explaining the whole show. The energy was electric!!
Did a workshop with one of their performers it was great. They taught me a dance with a sensu and one with a katana. Afterwards we watched a taishu engeki performance. I highly recommend it.
Amazing experience, our guide, I am so sorry but I forgot her name. But she was amazing. Explained everything and translated everything they said. She was very helpful through the whole show and before the show. Explained the dances and the music. Will highly recommend her and this place to family and friends
