Itinerary
Enjoy the chance to explore the World of James Herriot Museum, in the building where the world's most famous vet lived, worked and wrote his amazing books.
We make a brief visit to the small city of Ripon to visit the amazing cathedral, built on the site of the original Saxon church. You can explore the cathedral and its original crypt, built in 672AD.
Discover the quintessential English countryside as we travel through Wharfedale and Wensleydale on an amazing scenic tour of the Yorkshire Dales. This is the landscape and scenery made famous by James Herriot's adventures in All Creatures Great & Small. Countless photo opportunities present themselves as we take to the rural back roads and farm tracks that take us off the beaten track.
Take a walk across the village green and alongside the river Wharfe, following in the footsteps of Mrs Hall and her gentleman friend Gerald.
We enjoy a lunchtime stop in the charming town of Grassington ("Darrowby" in All Creatures Great & Small). You can see Skeldale House and the instantly recognisable market square from All Creatures Great & Small. To save time, your guide can help pre-order lunch (own expense) at the Drover's Arms (in reality, the Devonshire).
You'll pause in Hubberholme, where we have chance to see the amazing Church of St Michael and All Angels. The inside of the church is recognisable as the place where James & Helen get married.
We drive through Yockenthwaite - the location featured as Heston Grange - the Alderson's Farm, where James first meets Helen, in All Creatures Great & Small. We stop for photos overlooking Yockenthwaite.
We make a brief afternoon stop at the Wenselydale Creamery - chance to sample an amazing array of local cheeses in the free tasting room.

We had a great time with our tour guid, Pete. We finally learned the differences between Dale and Morse. We also learned the natural feature of each town through their names. The natural beauty of Yorkshire is amazing. Thank you very much for all your arrangements!
Outstanding! Pete is knowledgeable about the subject, and being from the area was able to offer a deeper insight into the sights.
Great tour. Knowledgeable and friendly guide and a tour group of just 6 makes for a memorable day. Very good combination of activities including Herriot Museum, Yorkshire Dales, pub lunch and cheese tasting. Chris shares his passion for the Dales and provides little insights into All Creatures Great and Small film locations. Definitely worth seeing if visiting York area.
What a great tour! Chris was extremely knowledgeable and provided a tremendous experience. I enjoyed the entire day.
Chris did a superb tour! We were a small group of 4, and we all spent a most enjoyable day experiencing the beautiful Yorkshire countryside, amplified with frequent stops. It was absolutely wonderful!
We enjoyed the full day tour of North Yorkshire, and venturing into the countryside. Chris is knowledgable & a wonderful ambassador of his ancestral homelands. The smaller group size (6), the stunning viewpoints & stops to take photos, the Kilburn White Horse and of course, the connections & locations to ‘All Creatures Great & Small’ were exceptional. The Ripon Cathedral, lunch & coffee stops added to the comfort of the day. Added bonuses: witnessing the show’s filming in progress (a rarity), seeing sheep dogs at work on a hillside, and slowing down for a herd of cattle on a roadway. Highly recommend this tour from two Canadians on their first visit to the UK. Shout out to Chris for his amazing driving skills on super narrow lanes!
Chris is an awesome tour guide. He’s very informative. He’s punctual and he’s very efficient. He would keep things going without rushing us and he would go out of his way to accommodate any needs or even just to fetch coffees so we don’t waste time with those little things. We would ask for him again the next time we are in York!
Chris did a great job showing us around the countryside. We had only four people on our tour, which was great. Besides the All Creatures areas, we also toured the Ripon Cathedral, walked around a sheep pasture, and had a brief look at the only castle in Britain never owned by the royal family. As to All Creatures, we toured the Herriott museum in Thirsk, which had great exhibits. We stopped in Grassington (exteriors for Skeldale House and the Drovers Arms), and had lunch at the Devonshire pub. Filming for the series had occurred the day before our visit, so the Drovers Arms sign was still up on the building. We also visited the church where James and Helen married, along with the Heston Grange farm. This is a full day tour, and is a little expensive, but my wife and I were very satisfied. Chris was very knowledgeable about the area and answered a lot of questions. Definitely a fun trip!
It was a fantastic small group tour with a wonderful guide named Pete. We had plenty of time to see the sights and the flexibility to linger at places we especially enjoyed. The emphasis on the “All Creatures Great and Small” experience was welcome, but the scenery holds its own, regardless of your level of interest.
Outstanding visit to land of "All creatures great and small! Pete did marvelous job narrating visits at all the key sites and while underway. It was truly an ⁸excellent learning experience. He is a gem - extremely helpful to us old timers and other guests.
