Okay, but easily could have been better. Might or might not do it again.

Our driver/guide was amiable, but new. The group was part English speaking, part French speaking, which made it more difficult for him. He did NOT provide much commentary on our trip, or what we could see, or where we were, even for the majority French speakers. On the outbound journey, there was a music video playing on the center console; he didn't even glance at it, but still. And he took personal phone calls.

Do not book this excursion

We booked this excursion during a one-day cruise stop in Tangier through Viator after comparing it to similar cruise-line offerings, which were significantly more expensive. Unfortunately, this turned out to be the worst excursion I have experienced in over 20 years of international travel—and much of that is due to clear misrepresentation of the service. The listing contained contradictory and misleading information. The itinerary repeatedly stated that multiple stops included “free admission,” yet the description suggested otherwise. In reality, key sites such as the lighthouse and Hercules Caves required payment. When this was raised, the operator acknowledged the discrepancy but deflected responsibility, blaming the platform rather than correcting the listing. Since then, the itinerary has been changed—but we took screenshots of the original posting, and other participants had printed copies confirming what was advertised at the time of booking. This is false advertising. Logistically, the experience was disorganized from the start. The posted start time differed from the confirmed time via WhatsApp, and the tour began even later. Multiple guests were given the same instructions but ended up at different pickup locations. The driver arrived late, communication was confusing, and coordination remained poor throughout the day. Additional costs were handled in a non-transparent manner. At Hercules Caves, where entry is approximately €8, we were charged $25 per person after the driver exchanged currency. At a restaurant stop, no menus or pricing were provided, yet we were charged $55 for what was described as “service,” despite average-quality food (which also included a hygiene issue). These charges were not disclosed and appeared to follow a pattern. The Medina portion felt more like being routed through selected vendor shops than a cultural experience. We were pressured to purchase items, rushed when attempting to explore independently, and at times group members were left behind and had to catch up. Historical insight was minimal and not memorable. Finally, the tour did not end as advertised. Instead of returning us to the original pickup location, we were left in the Medina and told to walk back to the cruise port. While Tangier is worth visiting, this excursion is not. The combination of misleading advertising, poor organization, undisclosed costs, and lack of transparency reflects a substandard and unprofessional operation. I strongly advise against booking this tour.

Operator response

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are genuinely sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations. However, we would like to clarify several important points for future travelers reading this review. First, regarding monument entrance fees: the Hercules Caves and Cap Spartel lighthouse are optional stops managed by local authorities, and entrance tickets are clearly marked as “not included” in the inclusions section of the booking page. We understand there may have been confusion caused by certain wording displayed on the platform at the time of booking, and once this was brought to our attention, we updated the itinerary description to avoid future misunderstandings. Concerning logistics and pickup coordination, cruise arrivals in Tangier can occasionally present operational challenges due to port traffic regulations and changing docking procedures. Our team contacted guests in advance via WhatsApp with detailed pickup instructions, and despite minor delays caused by port conditions that day, all participants were successfully picked up and the tour was completed as scheduled. Regarding additional expenses, all optional purchases, restaurant meals, camel rides, and monument tickets are independently managed by third-party vendors and remain entirely optional. Currency exchange assistance was provided only as a convenience for guests requesting help converting cash locally. We do not impose mandatory shopping stops, nor do we receive commissions from guest purchases. As for the Medina visit, Tangier’s old city is a living commercial and cultural area where artisan shops are naturally part of the experience. Guests are always free to browse independently during designated free time, though group timing must still be respected to ensure the tour operates smoothly for everyone. Finally, vehicle access near the cruise terminal is occasionally restricted, which may require drop-off within short walking distance of the port entrance. We fully respect every traveler’s opinion and continuously work to improve our communication and organization. At the same time, we believe this review does not entirely reflect the experience enjoyed by many other guests on the same tour. We wish you the best in your future travels.

Solo experience of a viator tour in Tangier

There needs to be a major shake up about meeting points. The meeting point provided in the Viator advertising does not seem to match the actual meeting points to be which are only provided at the last minute. This can be very confusing

Good tour but cut short by one hour

While the tour guide was very good, he was nearly an hour late, he said, due to the fact that his company sent him to do a pick up at the airport first. He did his best to show us a good time, but our tour was cut short by the hour he was late, as he had another tour after us.

City Guide

We enjoyed getting out of the city to see what is in the surrounding area. The cave was a bit disappointing but we enjoyed the beach camel ride. Our city guide was superb. Really knowledgable and able to answer all our questions. He was helpful, friendly and respectful.

An exceptional tour of Tanger

The tour was exceptional! First with Mohammed to Hercules Cave and the Cap Spartel lighthouse with many sights along the way. Then a walking tour with Moissan (sp?) thru Old Town, markets , Casbah and more. Perhaps one of the best overview of a city ever. Moroccans are friendly and welcoming wherever you go. A fantastic day! Completely worn out in a good way!

I booked this tour...

I booked this tour offered in English. There were 2 families of four on the van. My family speaks English, and the other family can speak both English and Spanish. The first part of the tour went to the beach side and included the camel riding. There was no tour guide with us. The driver did speak some English and did basic introduction along the way. The second part of the tour visited the old town. The driver dropped us there to meet the local tour guide. We found that the local guide speaks very limited English no better than the driver. We then noticed that the tour guide spent most of the time talking in Spanish with the other family and rarely talked to us in English. Sometimes the guide herself would need to ask the other family in Spanish how to explain something to us in English. The folks from the other family were very nice to translate the guide's Spanish to English so that we could barely get minimum understanding of what we were visiting. This significantly hurt our experience, and this was the worst tour experience that I've had on my visits to 60 countries.

Although we booked a private tour for 6 people the tour operator tried to force us on a big group tour but thankfully Mohammad came to our rescue and offered us a private tour as requested and he was a brilliant guide and made our day

That said, we are pleased that Mohammad was able to assist you and that you enjoyed the tour with him.
