Wow, I had no idea this would be such a fascinating experience. The view from the top of the dome was, of course, stunning. The climb was just the exercise we needed. But the information on the architectural feat that is the Brunelleschi Dome was absolutely amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed learning about what makes this place so special. Our guide was excellent to understand. We booked an early slot in the day so the enclosed staircase was not too hot and we missed the very, very long queue at the main door. We also had the cathedral all to ourselves at the beginning of our tour. The fresco of the dome is stunning. The ticket also includes entry to the museum ( a building very near the cathedral) and this was well worth exploring too for the amazing exhibits and the welcome air conditioning. The Bell tower was also included and if you are keen on the extra exercise and a photo of the Dome from a high spot nearby, then why not? However the view from the Dome is probably enough.
This climb is not for the weak- especially in the summer heat. I'm very glad we did it, and the views are amazing- but be prepared for VERY narrow passages, steep climbs, and limited breathing room. It was worth it in the end, but had I been less in shape I don't think I'd have enjoyed it very much.
Book the earliest tour and you’ll be inside with no other visitors. Start working out before you come.
We were the very first group to enter and enjoyed having the place to ourselves for about 15 minutes. We were able to climb to the top of the Duomo and have a few minutes to enjoy the view before it started getting crowded. Book the first tour of the morning. You won’t regret it.
It is advertised as 150 per ticket but they add an additional processing fee. So for 2 tickets I paid $350 which is over priced.
Climbing the dome was fun and the view of Florence was beautiful. The guided part of the tour did not add much value. I was disappointed that the exterior of the cathedral wasn’t covered at all. I travel a lot, and usually enjoy my tours. I don’t think this one was worth the money.
Hi, Thank you for your feedback. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed the dome climb and the beautiful views of Florence. We’re sorry the guided portion did not fully meet your expectations. Our guides are always happy to answer questions throughout the experience, and we appreciate your comments as they help us continue improving our tours.
Excellent guide and presentation
Good historical discussion of the Duomo to kick off the tour. Then the climb to the top of the dome which was absolutely amazing, if a bit hair-raising due to the steep, narrow winding stairs (463 up and 463 down). I didn’t do the bell tower after the dome—my knees had had enough— or the museum since it was a few blocks away. But the Duomo tour and dome climb was well worth it.
Definitely worth getting skip the line access!! It saved us a lot of time standing in line. We would have missed many of the details of the Duomo without our guide. Highly recommend!
I forgot to ask our guide her name, but she brought an incredible depth of knowledge about the Duomo. Her unique intersection of expertise in architecture, art history, and Florentine culture added so much to the experience. I only wish we’d had more time to learn about the structure and its history, though the dome climb itself is a fairly long process. Pro tip: maybe skip cardio the day before.
