Itinerary

90 min

Experience Edo-period Japan in Takayama and the UNESCO-listed Shirakawa-go village. You will have lunch at your own expense in Takayama, a town filled with interesting sights and serving as the gateway to the Japanese Alps. Be sure to explore the Sanmachi Suji District, which consists of three streets in the heart of Takayama's Edo town, located just east of the Miya-gawa River. These streets are lined with traditional houses, shops, restaurants, sake breweries, and cafes.

45 min

As part of your experience, savor a delectable Japanese-style teppanyaki set lunch at the renowned Koshiyama restaurant in Shirakawa-go. Indulge in the local specialty, Japanese Beef 'Hida Gyu,' which is raised in Gifu Prefecture and renowned for its rich marbling and exquisite flavor. Alternatively, you can opt for the Oden lunch, a comforting and flavorful dish featuring ingredients simmered in a savory broth. Both offerings highlight the authentic flavors of the region and provide a delightful culinary experience.

90 min

Then you will head to the famous Shirakawa-go to explore the old gassho-zukuri (thatch-roofed) style houses that dot this mountain village. Surrounded by rice paddies, you can hear the sounds of insects and birds if you listen closely. Located in a mountainous region that was cut off from the rest of the world for a long period of time, these villages with their Gassho-style houses subsisted on the cultivation of mulberry trees and the rearing of silkworms. The large houses with their steeply pitched thatched roofs are the only examples of their kind in Japan. Despite economic upheavals, the villages of Ogimachi, Ainokura, and Suganuma are outstanding examples of a traditional way of life perfectly adapted to the environment and people's social and economic circumstances.

Pass by

The Encounter Bridge is made of concrete and is narrow and swaying, making it thrilling. It is an important bridge connecting the parking lot and Shirakawa-go.

Pass by

The view from the observation deck in the countryside overlooking the valley scenery of forest-covered hills, rice fields, and village farms is beautiful. It costs 300 yen one way by shuttle bus, but it takes 10 minutes to walk there.

Pass by

A place where you can learn about the history of sericulture (raising silkworms) in Shirakawa-go.

Pass by

This is a preserved area with wooden houses built in the gassho style in the late 19th century.

Pass by

Have a wonderful time at this powerful shrine, which felt as if it were imbued with the power of a real god.

Shirakawago & Takayama bus tour

It was a very nice experience and the village was beautiful. Tasting sake in little Kyoto was a very nice experience. The bus driver drove excellently and the guides were very nice. The only thing I would like to say is that the English-speaking guide had some trouble with the language every now and then but otherwise he did an excellent job.

Day trip to Shirakawago & Takayama from Nagoya

Shirakawago & Takayama Day Trip Experience A day trip from Nagoya to both Shirakawa-go and Takayama is truly memorable, but it comes with a few trade-offs. The bus transfer was very well organised, running smoothly and on time, which made the journey comfortable and stress-free. However, the biggest challenge was time. Trying to cover both destinations in a single day felt rushed. 🏡 Shirakawago The village is absolutely beautiful, with its traditional gassho-zukuri houses. There is a lot to explore on foot, and walking between spots takes time. Due to crowds, queues can get quite long, especially for popular areas. Many visitors miss the famous observation deck viewpoint, as reaching it involves a walk and waiting time that doesn’t fit well into a tight schedule. 🏯 Takayama The old town is charming, with preserved streets and local shops. Again, time is limited, and exploring properly requires more than a short stop. A highlight here is the food — the famous Hida beef noodle dish is a must-try. It’s rich, flavourful, and one of the best culinary experiences of the trip

Operator response

Dear valued customer, Thank you so much for sharing your experience! We’re glad to hear that you found the bus transfer smooth, comfortable, and well-organized, and that you enjoyed the beauty of Shirakawa-go as well as the charm and delicious food in Takayama—especially the Hida beef! We understand your concerns about the limited time at each destination. Visiting both locations in one day can feel fast-paced, and your comments are very valuable as we continue to review and improve our tour experience. We truly appreciate your insights and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again on a future trip, perhaps with a more relaxed itinerary. Best regards, VIP Japan Tours

Shirakawago and Takayama day tour

A very good tour. Our tour guide Yu was good. Everything was well explained. We had a choice of local Japanese lunch which we skipped and used that time to roam around. A long scenic drive. After visiting big cities the small villages were very charming and peaceful. Breath-taking. Views from the observation deck.

Tour guide has trouble with the English language

We booked this tour principally to see the high mountains in the area, but it was raining pretty nonstop, with fog everywhere. We could still get a glimpse of one side of a snowy peak. The villages themselves have interesting architecture and the beef lunch was self-cook barbecue, but good. Lots of shopping opportunities that we had little use for. The only disappointment we had with the tour was the tour guides ability to communicate in English. We could hear him fine, but what he was saying g was largely incomprehensible even though he repeated some phrases several times. His delivery was broken English with Japanese accent.

Great tour!

Great tour and tour guide. Loved the destinations and the comfortable transportation. I’m iffy on the meal. It was just ok. But it’s kind of a must because the bus stops there.

Poor quality tour. Very odd tour guide.

Just read a pre-prepared script in English that was hard to understand. We went through amazing mountain scenery but the mountains were treated as they weren't there. Very specific information on ice cream shops given 40 minutes in advance so it is forgotten by the time you arrive. We were told there was no waiting for late-comers but we waited twice for people who were late. Chaotic and baffling check-in system that had most people shaking their heads in disbelief. Bizarre seating plan that wasn't explained. You were supposed to know in advance who your guide was and go to them. But how would you know? Too much time spent on stupid paperwork.
