This was mildly entertaining but I was hoping for more history and less “ghost” tour.
Be aware that this tour has very little to do with history and is really spoken about way more as a ghost tour than anything else. Unfortunately, the tunnels underneath Old Town Pizza no longer extend as far as they used to. The underneath portion really only includes a few "rooms" and in fact the tour now begins with a visit to a building upstairs so you can hear a few ghost stories about someone found in an elevator shaft so you look at the elevator (which is beautiful but not at all related to the tunnels). Then there are a lot of stories about "during one tour, one person said they smelled perfume" and "during one tour, someone said they saw someone walk by but it turns out it wasn't a real person but it was a spirit". My experience is absolutely flavored by the fact that I was lucky enough to take a tour of the tunnels in the early 2000s that was led by a historian so I got a lot of the real history. Unfortunately these tour guides started their sentences with "it's my opinion", and "i would guess...". There's nothing wrong with that - they are absolutely not marketing themselves as historians and I think that's appropriate. I think I went into it thinking that I'd get as extensive and accurate tour as I got the first time and this was not it. If I had been expecting a ghost tour I'd probably have enjoyed it more for what it was but if you are expecting accurate history or to see much of the tunnels themselves, you will want to adjust your expectations.
Natasha was awesome! She was incredibly knowledgeable and shared the information in a fun way.
Excellent history and actual underground tour. Several other ghost tours in Portland do not actually take you into the tunnels. This one does.
Very fun and spooky tour- the historical content is a bit disturbing, as is with any haunted history, but the guide, Natasha was incredible. She infused the tragic historical information with her warm comedic personality and ensured everyone felt comfortable at all times moving through the different areas of the tunnels. Highly recommend!
There are some very steep stairs that are very narrow. The senior person I was with had difficulty navigating the stairs. One stairway was also quite long, probably three stories.
Excellent guide, very descriptive. Cool lanterns and you walk through the underground tunnels. Tasty beer at the end.
Skippy made the tour so fun and interesting. He was funny and had great stories too. We had such a great time!
Natasha was a great guide. The tour was interesting and the underground was fun to walk through. Very cool spot if you are looking for something off the beaten path.
Doug was an amazing tour guide for our Shanghai Tunnel tour! He was knowledgeable, engaging, and brought the history—both factual and supernatural—to life with great energy and humor. Our group was small, which made the experience feel more relaxed and personal, and there was plenty of opportunity to ask questions along the way. The pizza and beer afterward were a great bonus and the perfect way to wrap up the tour. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Portland!
