The Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge is a manatee sanctuary nestled in the heart of Florida's Nature Coast. Spanning over 80 acres, this refuge is a haven for an array of wildlife, offering visitors a captivating glimpse into the region's natural wonders. One of the refuge's most enchanting features is its resident population of West Indian manatees. These gentle giants, often referred to as "sea cows," seek refuge in the warm spring waters of Crystal River during the winter months, making it one of the premier destinations for manatee viewing in the United States. A resident herd of 40-60 manatees make the refige home year round. Beyond the manatees, the refuge is home to a diverse array of bird species, including herons, egrets, ospreys, and bald eagles. Birdwatchers will delight in the opportunity to spot these majestic creatures as they soar overhead or wade through the shallows in search of food. John was incredibly personable and knowledgeable, making our experience both enjoyable and educational. We saw manatees, a wide variety of water birds, and plenty of fish along the way. He was wonderful with our young children, and we especially appreciated the local insights he shared throughout the tour. When thunderstorms affected our original plans, the staff was extremely flexible and accommodating in helping us reschedule, which we greatly appreciated. The gift shop was well stocked, and every employee we encountered was warm, welcoming, and friendly. We had a fantastic experience and would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area!
We had a wonderful guide, John. We saw numerous manatees and some other wildlife along the way. Highly recommend this trip. My only recommendation for Viator is to change the meeting point on the emails. It still says to meet at Pete’s Pier, which is apparently the old meeting spot. They now meet at Fun 2 Dive.
Loved, loved, loved the Manatee and wildlife tour by Captain John - a tour that saw 7 manatee (one with a baby!!!). John was very personable and knowledgeable, using patience with all our questions. We gained great understanding of the manatee ecosystem, the importance of the springs for the manatees as well as wildlife information. Myself, my husband, my son, and future daughter-in-law (son/future DIL are from Missouri) all consider this tour as a 2nd trip possibility in the future. It is worth while.
The entire experience was great. Caption John was very personable and informative. Thanks for a memorable experience
We booked a private wildlife site-seeing tour and everything was fantastic! Everyone from the front desk, to the van driver, to our boat captain was incredibley friendly and knowledgable. Our guide, Captain John, did an amazing job of tailoring the tour to our family level. He was great with the kids and shared excellent information about what we were seeing. We really wanted to see a manatee, and despite it being off season and later on a hot hot morning, he worked really hard to position the boat and we were able to see a few. We're so grateful for his hard work and the wonderful tour and memories our family enjoyed! When the kids are older we can't wait to come back and swim with the manatees! Thanks Captain John and staff!
Wonderful cruise on the Bay seeing manatees and other wildlife on and in the water. The boat captain did a fantastic job. Being out on the water is so relaxing. We took our grand girls out while they were visiting and they lived it too!
Our group of ten had a wonderful time on the manatee boat tour. We arrived early, but rather than making us wait around, they were able to get us started right away. Our captain, John, was a perfect guide - funny, breezy, welcoming and extremely knowledgeable of the area and the wildlife. His anecdotes and insights were hilarious and engaging, and he was very kind to the younger members of our party. This is a great way to see not just manatees, but other examples of the local wildlife, as well as exploring the river and bay areas. Highly recommended!
My family and I had an absolutely fantastic time on the See Crystal River Manatee & Wildlife Viewing Cruise, and it was the perfect little adventure to add to our trip. Our captain, John, was incredible and so knowledgeable about the local area and its history. He knew all the best spots to find the wildlife, and thanks to his expertise, we were lucky enough to see ospreys, turtles, alligators, and beautiful manatees up close. The absolute highlight of the trip, however, was how amazing Captain John was with my 10-year-old autistic son. He went completely above and beyond by letting him "drive" the boat for a bit, which my son raved on and on about for hours after we got back to land. As a parent, seeing that level of kindness and patience meant the world to us. It turned a great wildlife tour into an unforgettable core memory for our family, and we highly recommend booking a cruise with them!
Marty was a great captain found manatees and dolphins even in the off season!! Great wealth of knowledge taught us things we did not know about manatees! We had a great time I would highly recommend to anyone! Also having the whole boat to ourselves being the off season didn’t hurt either!
We had a great experience viewing manatees and other wildlife. Captain John was very knowledgeable and took time with our grandkids. We would highly recommend this adventure
