We arrived to Santorini by cruise ship, and were given the options to traverse the side of a mountain and explore the town above : cable car, walk, or ride donkey up trail. Feeling adventurous we decided to go by donkey. The handlers promptly helped us into the saddle, took our 10 euro, slapped the haunches, and we were off. What we did not realize was this is an unguided tour! The donkey knows the way, however, stops for prolonged periods to rest. My husband’s ride got about 1/2 way up and decided it was done, so he was left to hike the rest of the way! Soo, if you choose to go by donkey, make sure you have comfortable shoes on, and would be able to walk up with a pretty good ascent. The views from the top were amazing, and makes for a good story!
