Santorini Caldera Walk Hiking Experience Fira-Oia

Description
You’d be missing out on some of the best views in Europe if you didn’t walk the caldera-top path at least once. Santorini is a pretty amazing place. A volcanic eruption over 3000 years ago morphed this tiny island in Greece into something you’dont expect to see . You also have tiny towns full of buildings dressed in white, adding to the otherworldly utopia feeling. The walking path is a mix of paved, pedestrian streets and dirt hiking trails. On our way from Fira to Oia you will pass through the towns of Firostefani and Imerovigli and enjoy some of the most beautiful views of the island

You need to prepare yourself for some long climb on loose gravels, it is a solid 3 hour hike. Sceneries are amazing including blue dome church. We climb more than 100 meters. One thing I did not expect was the ride back to the hotel, which was included in the package, was not arranged ahead of time and we were walking on the street for another 15 min at noon when the sun is scorching hot (after a 6 mile walk) while the guide talked on his phone to find us a ride back. He even had the audacity to tell us we could take a cab home at our own expense. We sat on the step by the street waiting for another 15 min before the ride came.
Excellent experience with Arsenios (our guide) this morning. Fantastic scenery, great info from Arsenios and a lovely hike (even experienced a big storm!!). Be sure to wear appropriate footwear (walking shoes / boots are recommended) and pack a light jacket / jumper too (if walking at this time of year)
George was absolutely fantastic! The hike was exquisite! Absolutely amazing! The views were breathtaking! Highly recommend!
This tour is overpriced for the experience. Their was no extra value/services provided that we could have not just done ourselves. The Guide didn't show up at scheduled pick-up time of 8am and only contacted us directly 53 minutes (at 8:53am). The pickup time was confirmed to us at 6:44pm the evening before the tour. He didn't pick us up until 9:40am! We sent messages via the Viator app, as well as on WhatsApp to the tour company and no one responded until I had our hotel front desk phone the company. Overall this was a poor experience and I would never recommend this tour. Just do the hike self guided, it is a beautiful hike and easy to navigate on your own!
Dear Kim. Thank you for your Review . Yes this is an expensive Activity as you mention above . And yes is an easy path that anyone can go . I am prety sure your safety worth those money. Your guide is the and if something happens on your way to Oia ,witch is far away from the main road , he knows waht to do. Is a hikking path so i dont really understand the extra service as the return transfer that you didnt wish to have was included . Now about the timing you could be more specific cause first you say you picked up at 08:53 than you say at 09:40 . As i spoke to your Hotel front desk and with your guide no one could found you . I am really sorry you had a poor experience and thank you again for your review , That makes our company better and we will always look to do the best for our guests . If you have even an ounce of fitness do this hike. It was so beautiful and memorable. Was a highlight of our trip to Santorini for sure. It isn't horribly strenuous but it is 10k up and down the edge of the cauldron. We're fairly fit and didn't have to stop to rest but we did for the endless photo ops. I recommend starting early. We were on the trail by 7:30. Bring water and cash for the fruit stand about half way. Watermelon hit the spot at that moment of the hike! There are no bathrooms anywhere on the trail I'd recommend taking care of that in town before hitting the trail. Bring water!!! If you are debating doing this stop and just get out there!
Great scenery and lots of good information! Enjoyable walk at an even pace! Our guide shared a nice combination of personal experiences along with historical insights! Ensured we had the best photo opportunities! Highly recommended!
Hiking Santorini with Panos is an experience I will wholeheartedly recommend to anyone traveling to Greece. As a true local, Panos brings a depth of knowledge and connection to the island that elevates the entire journey. He knows every turn of the trail, every hidden viewpoint, and shares fascinating insights about Santorini’s history, geology, and culture along the way. The hike itself was not just scenic—it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Walking along the caldera with panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, passing through traditional villages, and watching the shifting light over the whitewashed cliffs was genuinely awe-inspiring. It felt less like a tourist activity and more like being welcomed into the heart of the island. Panos is also an outstanding guide in every practical sense. He’s in great shape, kept a pace that was comfortable yet energizing, and came prepared with extra water and supplies for the group. More than that, he was a joy to talk to—friendly, funny, and genuinely invested in making sure everyone had an incredible experience. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a deeper, more meaningful way to connect with Santorini beyond the typical postcard views, I can’t recommend this hike enough. It’s the kind of experience that stays with you long after your trip ends.
My cousin and I were amazed at the kindness that our guide Arsenios showed us. He was very accommodating and knowledgeable of the region. He took extra care of us because of our needs and was just a delight to walk the beautiful caldera with. I cannot recommend this walk/hike enough. The scenery is beautiful. The churches are amazing and both Firs and Oia cannot be missed. Thank you again Arsenios and I hope we meet again. Joanne & Sue
Dear Joanne & Sue, Thank you so much for your kind words! We're truly touched by your lovely message. Arsenios will be so happy to hear how much you appreciated his care and guidance — he always goes above and beyond to make every experience special. We're thrilled you enjoyed the caldera walk and the stunning beauty of Fira and Oia. It means a lot to us that you had such a memorable time. We hope to welcome you back someday soon for another adventure! Until then, take care and keep the memories close.
Panos was the perfect guide. He was patient, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. The walk was very enjoyable. At first, it seemed daunting to walk so far, but the time went quickly. There was a lot to see on the way, and Panos was excellent in pointing out the interesting things . The trail was a bit steep and slippery in places, so care was needed. I would highly recommend this tour.
My guide was wonderful. He made sure group was safe on this hiking experience. He told us all about the history of the area. It is a beautiful hike. Highly recomend.
