Prepare for a captivating journey to Wai O Tapu Thermal Wonderland, one of the world's most surreal and active geothermal parks, located just 20 minutes from Rotorua CBD. You will be guided through Wai O Tapu for approximately 45-60 minutes to explore its vibrant and unique landscape before we depart for the majestic Lady Knox Geyser.

Admission included15 min

Our journey continues to the Lady Knox Geyser, a true marvel that erupts just once a day, precisely at 10:15 AM. Join us to uncover the fascinating story behind her remarkable punctuality!

Admission included90 min

Next, we journey to the Jurassic Waimangu Valley, the world's youngest geothermal eco-system. Here, you'll witness firsthand the raw power and breathtaking beauty of Mother Nature, alongside the dramatic aftermath of the 1886 volcanic eruption of Mt. Tarawera. We'll spend approximately 90 minutes at Waimangu, which includes a relaxing 30-minute lunch break at the scenic Waimangu Café. Please note: Lunch is not included in price

Admission included90 min

Finally, join our local guide for a captivating journey to Te Puia, New Zealand's premier Māori arts and crafts institute. Unlike Lady Knox, which erupts once daily, Pōhutu can erupt up to 20 times a day, roughly every 90 minutes, reaching impressive heights of up to 30 meters (100 feet). Te Puia is also a dedicated conservation site, home to three native kiwi birds bred and raised within its care. We hope that by the end of your day, you'll have witnessed not one, but two magnificent geysers, and satisfied your curiosity for New Zealand's iconic kiwi birds! We'll spend approximately 60-90 minutes at Te Puia.

60 min

As our remarkable day concludes, prepare for a relaxing and picturesque scenic drive, showcasing the natural beauty and local charm of Rotorua. We'll journey along routes that unveil stunning vistas, allowing you to soak in the serene atmosphere and capture some final, memorable photographs. Our drive will wind through areas highlighting: Rotorua's shimmering lakes: Glimpse the tranquil waters of Lake Rotorua itself, perhaps catching reflections of the sky and surrounding hills. You might also get a peek at some of the smaller, hidden lakes that dot the region, each with its own unique character. Panoramic viewpoints: We'll navigate to elevated spots that offer breathtaking panoramic views of the Rotorua caldera, the city, and the distant volcanic peaks. These vantage points provide a fantastic opportunity to appreciate the geological wonders that define this region.

Fantastic Tour! Tell Clive I say Hi!

This was a fantastic tour company my guide was Clive he was fantastic. Super friendly, knowledgeable. Really wonderful tour we saw so much. The mudpools, where the pink and white terraces would have been. Because Clive was so amazing I learned a lot about the area. The history was fascinating to learn about. How the craters and everything was formed. We got to see lady Knox which goes off everyday around 10am that was so cool to see. And then as I booked the full day I went to the cultural center Te Puia that was so fantastic I learned alot. I even got to see Kiwis.

Terrific one day tour experience in Rotorua

Elite Tours guide Shaun picked us at our hotel on time and we enjoyed a small group tour. Shaun was very informative at each location we visited and during the drive time in between stops had terrific info and some jokes. We joined Clint in the afternoon and had an equally wonderful experience. All the places we visited were amazing and beautiful, the information plentiful. We felt well taken care of during our tour and happily recommend this tour company.

Operator response

Tēnā koe! What a "double-feature" you had! We are so glad you got to experience the dream team of Shaun and Clint in one day. At Elite Adventures, we’re a bit like a geothermal relay race—we’re thrilled the hand-off went smoothly and that the quality didn't skip a beat. We take great pride in our guides' ability to fill the "drive time" with more than just silence; though we do apologize if Shaun’s jokes were as "corny" as the local maize fields! It’s wonderful to know you felt well taken care of from hotel pickup to the final drop-off. Making sure our guests feel like part of the whānau (family) is exactly what we aim for. Thank you for the high recommendation—we’ll be sure to tell Shaun and Clint they’re both officially "wonderful." Ngā mihi.

Good cultural and geothermal experience

Phil picked us up at our motel and we did the full day tour for a more complete experience. We were guided around the Wai O Tapu geothermal area for an hour. Then to Lady Knox Geyser, which was way too crowded. The best thing was the girl singing during the bubbly eruption. The walk through Waimangu Volcanic Valley was great to see how the valley has changed since the eruption in 1886. We only had to walk down the valley as there was a bus there to take us back up. Lunch at visitors center was just okay. When we dropped some people back in Rotorua, Phil took us to a Maori community in town to see where people live- a nice extra touch. We then went to Te Puia, which had an extensive geothermal area as well as an arts and crafts institute where we could watch Maori artists work and see examples of finished projects.

Operator response

Thank you so much for choosing our full-day tour and for taking the time to provide such a detailed account of your day with Phil! We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed the "complete experience." It's wonderful that Phil was able to add that extra touch by taking you to the Maori community in town; we believe those personal insights into local life really make a trip special. We’re glad the singing during the eruption at Lady Knox Geyser stood out to you—it is a unique part of the experience, even when the area is busy. It is also great to know you appreciated the convenience of the shuttle at Waimangu Volcanic Valley after exploring the fascinating changes in the landscape there. We appreciate your honest feedback regarding the lunch at the visitors centre and the crowds at the geyser. We are always looking for ways to improve our guests' comfort and will certainly consider your comments. It sounds like you had a very productive visit to Te Puia as well! Seeing the Maori artists at work is always a highlight. We hope these memories, and the many things you learned about our geothermal and cultural history, stay with you for a long time.

Great all day tour. Must do if visiting Rotorua for a short trip.

Our tour guide was Phil who was fantastic. We visited some amazing geothermal sites and he was very knowledgeable about the geology and nature, giving us great info at each lookout point. He also gave us insight into how the local population harness the geothermal energy for their homes and energy needs which was very interesting to see. We also visited the Volcanic Valley and Phil guided us through the history of its creation. He also knew many cool facts about the flora in the area. Beautiful views throughout. Great day spent outdoors and thanks again to Phil for being a great host.

Operator response

It really is a special part of living in Rotorua! We're also glad you enjoyed the walk through the Volcanic Valley and Phil's 'cool facts' about our native flora. I’ll be sure to pass your thanks along to him—he’ll be stoked to hear he was such a great host for your day outdoors. Hope to see you again!

UNREAL EXPERIENCE🌟 - Genuinely a day ill never forget!

AMAZING, UNIQUE, BEAUTIFUL, MEMORABLE🌋❤️🌟 Im a huge nature lover! Whether thats geology, beaches, mountains, wildlife, the ocean, or volcanoes! So these were some unreal experiences and places to see! Also what undoubtedly added to our experience was our guide Clint. Absolutely FANTASTIC - Whatever you’re paying him, pay him more lol! Super knowledgeable about the area, geology and history, answered everyone’s questions with enthusiasm (even if he’s probably answered the same ones 1000 times) & a great sense of humour! Our bus even had an issue at one point too (something to do with fluid) but he sorted it while we were at Te Puia without issue or added delay, so wouldn’t have even known there was a problem. Absolutely recommending this to all and any friends that I hear are travel to New Zealand in the future! I don’t normally leave reviews unless im genuinely blown away. This is only the 3rd reviews I can recall making (and im 32 countries travelled and counting) To anyone reading this - DONT MISS THIS!🤩🌋 Thanks guys!

Operator response

Kia ora! Wow, thank you so much for such an enthusiastic and kind review! Being one of only three reviews you’ve ever left across 32 countries is an absolute honor for us. We are so glad that our mix of geology, volcanoes, and wildlife hit the spot for a fellow nature lover. Clint is truly a star—his ability to keep the energy high (and his mechanical skills sharp!) is exactly why we love having him on the team. I’ll be sure to pass on your 'pay rise' recommendation to the office! 😉 It’s great to hear the bus transition was seamless for you; we always aim to keep the magic happening out front while we handle the logistics in the back. Thank you for the high recommendation to your friends, and we hope your future travels are just as memorable!

If you have transport, not much to be gained from your. If you don’t consider half day your rather than full day

The tour was rushed . Would suggest leaving out Lady Knox and spending more time at the other sites visited. I did no feel we got much added value from the tour as the sites had good information boards and spent our time better. I think guides variable. There was not much gained by doing afternoon cultural visit as part of the tour as guiding eas done by the moati village

Operator response

Kia ora Nigal, Thank you for taking the time to share your honest feedback with us. We genuinely value hearing from our guests as it helps us refine our itineraries. I am sorry to hear that the day felt rushed for you. Balancing the fixed timings of the Lady Knox Geyser with our other stops is a challenge we constantly monitor, and your suggestion about prioritizing more time at the geothermal sites over the geyser presentation is a perspective we will certainly discuss with our operations team. Regarding the afternoon cultural visit, our goal is to provide seamless transport and a curated full-day experience, but we appreciate your point regarding the specialized guiding provided by the village staff. We aim for our guides to add value through local history and insights during the drive, and I’m sorry if we missed the mark for you on this occasion. We appreciate you choosing to explore Rotorua with us, and we hope the rest of your time in New Zealand is wonderful. Ngā mihi, The Elite Adventures Team

Great overall experience / cramped bus

Tour guide Phil was great. Surprised by the large number of geothermal sites we saw. The topper was in the afternoon geysers with waterfall. Only negative was the bus was cramped and in some seats the wheel-well.took away foot space. But drive times are short so it is manageable. Highly recommended.

Operator response

Thank you for the high recommendation! We are so glad Phil could show you such a surprising variety of geothermal wonders—that afternoon geyser and waterfall from Pohutu is truly an Elite Adventures favourite. We appreciate your honest feedback regarding the seating. We're glad the short drive times made it manageable for you!
