Oh my! What a wonderful experience the cooking class with the lovely Ranees and Chandrika was. After Ranees took us around the central market in Kandy, showing us some produce we'd never seen before, he drove us to his home in the hills where we were welcomed by his wife Chandrika. They made us feel instantly at home and we began to start making the most amazing feast, starting with an explanation on the spices we would be using, including Ranees's very own curry powder blends. We cracked our own coconuts, although failed dismally at saving the coconut water, shredded the flesh and made coconut milk. I'm not sure which dish was my favourite, but the biggest surprise for me was how amazing the okra stir fry was. After the main meal, we were treated to a lesson on how to make coconut filled pancakes and hoppers. Every dish was a mouthful of delight. We loved the food and the experience, and we have a new and more in depth appreciation of Sri Lankan food. I think the eggplant and wing bean dish will be high on our rotation back home and can't to remake all the dishes for our family and friends. Thankyou Ranees and Chandrika xx We hope to see you again
Be sure to book! This was our greatest evening in Sri Lanka, Ranees and his family are incredibly warm. We were picked up from the hotel, went shopping together at the market and afterwards prepared various curries and kottu. Everything was perfectly prepared and the whole family helped. A really great experience and the most delicious food on our entire trip.
What a great experience! Being welcomed in to the home of Ramees and his wife Chandrika to learn and participate in the cooking experience was one of the highlights of my trip. Not only do you learn about local food and techniques, it's a lovely sociable way to get a glimpse of Sri Lanka through its food. Then you get to eat the fruits of your labour - it was one of the best and varied meals I had! Yummy Kandy cooking came highly recommended by a friend and I'll definitely be recommending it to others!
Fantastic! Mega tasty - so cozy too
We experienced a great evening with delicious Sinhalese dishes at YummiKandyCookingClass. We got to know the variety of spices and vegetables and prepare them with the family. The hosts were super friendly and we had a wonderful evening. We can only recommend this cooking evening.
It was a very good experience, the family were extremely kind and friendly, we were on the marked, and it was fun seeing were you get your vegetables and more. The food tasted amazing, and it was fun trying to cook local food All in all a very good evening and we would recommend this to everyone that wants to try a cooking class
This is a family business. Cooking is authentic, informative, fun. The results were delicious and the talk around the table was really interesting.
My friends and I are enthusiastic cooks and eaters, so we were looking for a class that allowed us to taste and cook as many different dishes as we could. With over 12 dishes, this did not disappoint!! The hosts went above and beyond to ensure we had a fun time and learned about Sri Lankan food. When I mentioned offhand that I was hoping to cook more than just curry and rice, they added an additional kottu making lesson. We even got to make the flatbreads from scratch! The visit to the market was interesting and being able to see it in action was a blast! It was the best meal we've had in Sri Lanka by far, and an absolute highlight of our trip!
Had a fantastic time visiting the markets (really friendly vendors!) & making a variety of local dishes. As it was a mixed group, food was made to suit a variety of diets and tolerances to chilli! Finished with the best meal we've had in Sri Lanka, far and away.
This was an outstanding experience. We made 12 (!) dishes using lots of local spices and vegetables we’d never seen before. The outcome was delicious. But what’s even more important, it was extremely hands on. The kids (ages 15, 13 and 12) got to fry popadoms, create coconut shavings, chop veggies, crush spices and be guided throughout by the kind, warm and patient cook. We came out with full bellies, ear to ear smiles and a bible of recipes. We’ll never forget this!
