When visiting Stone Town, you cannot miss the Old Fort. It’s history tells the story of Zanzibar in a nutshell. Old Fort is one of the oldest buildings in Stone Town, First used by the Portuguese then turned into an Arab Fort then used as a Zanzibar train station and now as the cultural center of Stone Town it hosts festivals like Sauti za Busara and Zanzibar International Film Festivals Originally built by the Portuguese in the 17th century and later re-built by the Omanis in the 18th century. It is free to visit, and cultural festivals and happenings are often organized in the inner courts of the fort.
The Anglican Cathedral of Christ Church was built in Stone Town (the old part of Zanzibar city) in the place where the biggest slave market of Eastern Africa operated Outside the Cathedral, there is a stone monument showing four people enchained by their necks as a way of reproducing the way in which slaves were offered to buyers. The trade of slaves was the main activity and it commercially linked Europeans (who used slaves for plantations in the Indian Ocean) with African rulers. By the 19th century, the Zanzibar Sultanate stood out for being the main slave market in Eastern Africa due to its strategic location in the Indian Ocean. It is estimated that between 1830 and 1873, around 600,000 people were sold as merchandise and thousands of other people visited the place temporarily.
Is an important historical building located in the Baghani area of Stone Town, Zanzibar. It was built by French missionaries between 1893 and 1898, and the plans were drawn by the same French architect who designed the cathedral in Marseilles, France. The defining characteristic of the cathedral are its twin spires (similar to those of Marseille’s church) which are prominent elements of the Stone Town’s skyline and can be easily spotted from a distance off the coast. The cathedral interior is painted with murals from the Old Testament. The tiles and stained glass windows were all imported from France. The cathedral is in regular use by Stone Town’s Catholic community. There are several masses held each Sunday and occasionally on weekdays.

Excellent tour around Stone Town with a lot of details of the history of the place. Our guide was knowledgeable and with a warm personality.
Insightful 3-hours with Osman (guide) to learn more about the history of stone town. Started with a former slave market (great exhibition there! Must do!) then went to the main market and passed by the fish section (interesting experience), passed by Freddy M museum, bought some spices on the way and finished up with a bite at the night market. Private tours are always best! Really enjoyed all the experience! Highly recommend! For those who prefer to spend morning / day at the beach and have a nice walk later in the afternoon (tour started at 4:30 PM and we finished around 8PM!)! Ideal!
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your Stone Town tour with Osman. We truly appreciate your recommendation and hope to welcome you back to Zanzibar soon!
We did the stone town and prison island tour. We had our guide Mohammed who was amazing and out driver Khalid. We were able to tailor our tour to see what we wanted in Stone town and had time to do shopping. The whole day was at our pace and to our needs. Took us to an amazing lunch spot. Really knowledgeable. Super tour and service from Coastline again. My 3rd tour with them. Would highly recommend.

Hakuna matata with Coastline tours🥰 Traveled to Zanzi dzee bar with my sisters September 2023. Booked airport transfers with Coastlines and they responded timely, thanking us for booking with them. They then sent a brochure of activities to do in Zanzibar. We already had a tailored itinerary we had drafted and shared it with them and they accommodated all our requests and scheduled an incredible week on tours and excursions just for us. I can’t thank Mohammed, Abdul, Khalid, Othman and Said enough for their awesome hospitality. If you are looking for a personal touch to your tour guide experience in Zanzibar, book with Coastlines. Hakuna shida!!!

Superb day with Saïd! He is very kind, explains the history of the city very well and likes to share his culture! Very accommodating, he didn't hesitate to give us time during the visit to the place we wanted to explore in more depth! I highly recommend Saïd as a French-speaking guide, thank you for this beautiful day!
This was such an amazing tour! Ousmane was so knowledgeable and provided us with a lot of historical background and fun facts throughout the tour. It is totally worth your time especially if this is your first time visiting Zanzibar. We highly recommend it!
Osman is a great guy, very knowledgeable and the 3 hours flew by! There's a lot to see and information to take in but I definitely learnt a lot today! I would definitely recommend this tour, it was a lovely morning and helped my understanding of the island a lot.
I went on a walking tour of Stone Town on my first day in Zanzibar. Said was very knowledgable about the city and excited to share everything he knew with me. He customized the trip based on my interest and dropped me off at the restaurant where my friends were waiting at the end. Stone Town is confusing and twisty-turny but Said knows that city so well. Said was also the guide for my friend and I at Jozani National Forest. I think he knows every plant in the forest. All of the various guides at the forest help each other out so we found the monkeys in no time. Said even spotted an elephant shrew. He is a joy to be around and a great guide.
An excellent guide, top quality Service, Said knows very well the history of Tanzania very invested in his work! We had to do three hours we finally spent all afternoon and much of the evening with him. It is pleasant to listen! I recommend it for your activities! He is attentive and attentive but above all very good advice
