This is not a negative review.

At first we were surprised to learn that we purchased a walking tour. The Viator description stated we’d be “picked up” at our hotel. So, one would assume to be “picked up” in a vehicle. Additionally, taking into consideration the price of the tour one would also assume to be driven. We were also trying to avoid the sweltering Kyoto summer heat. Well, best made plans, blah, blah, blah. So, for the next 6 hours we walked, and walked, and walked all the while being led by a remarkable gentleman named, Masahisa (Mike) Makino. We tried to guess Mike’s age hoping he was not older than partner and I because he marched us from one fascinating site to another without hardly breaking a sweat. His wealth of knowledge is overwhelming and his pride in Japanese history shines through. Mike guided us from site to site using Kyoto’s efficient subway system all the while providing us with fascinating information about what we were seeing. So, if you are ready to get a workout while learning from an expert, go with Mike. However, if you have mobility difficulties make sure to have a driver.
