Description

Join Kanae for a market tour of Sapporo Morning Market and Jogai Market, before heading to her kitchen to learn how to prepare traditional Japanese dishes such as kinpira-gobo (sweet and salty cooked burdock), agedashi-tofu (deep fried and seasoned tofu), miso soup. A US college graduate, Kanae is a fun host who loves to share stories about how locals live and eat. She is eager to accommodate your request for menus so let her know when you make a booking request. She is also happy to introduce Hokkaido dishes such as soup curry, chan chan yaki and kaisen-don (donburi of fresh seafood) instead of typical homestyle menus. Originally from Kamakura, Kanae and her husband and two daughters have lived in Sapporo for over a decade. Influenced by her mother who was a great cook, Kanae has always loved food and cooking. Having lived in Hokkaido that boasts the best produce in Japan, Kanae appreciates and enjoys cooking with locally sourced fresh, native vegetables, fish, meat and seasonings.

Fun day and lovely host!

Kanae-San took me through several small local markets, full of fresh fish and fruit/veggies, as well as spices . Then we cooked a delicious meal in her home. She was a lovely host! Thank you so much!

Good talk and good food

What a lovely morning I had with Kanae both shopping and preparing our lunch together. The food was delicious as well as nutritious. I would recommend this tour to anyone in the Sapporo area who likes to cook and learn more about the food history of this area.

Kanae is a great host and...

Kanae is a great host and wonderful conversationalist. The soup curry we cooked together was delicious as well. The whole experience really was a highlight of my trip, and I’d recommend it to anyone considering doing a cooking class with a local guide.

A wonderful time in snowy Sapporo!

My wife and I had the opertunity to join Kanae for her market tour and cooking class. From the moment she picked us up to the drive back to the station it was a time filled with joy and laughter. Her English was amazing and she was full of humor and good information. The meal was amazing and tasty, the time could not have been better spent. Five stars!

Lovely and calm lunch with a local

We joined Kanae to browse a market. We had fun looking at all the food (mostly fish) and asking questions. Kanae bought some fish and then took us to her house, a beautiful place on the edge of the mountain and we cooked lunch together. Lovely!

Delightful and heartwarming

Mrs. Kanae welcomed us and took us to the local market where we had the chance to witness the locals selling fish and vegetables. She then took us to her lovely house and welcomed us in. Throughout the whole experience Kanae has been nothing but delightful to us. She modified the menu because my partner does not eat meat and she has responded to all our numerous questions on Japanese cuisine and culture. She enlightened me on the four basic pillars of Japanese cooking and i cannot be anything but deeply thankful to her for the time she shared with us. Grazie mille di cuore Kanae-san! Hope to see you again

Authentic home-style Japanese Cooking Experience

Loved our cooking class with Kanae in her beautiful home surrounded by mountains and falling snow. We were collected at the meeting point by Kanae and then driven first the local fish and food markets where we purchased our supplies for lunch. Surprisingly, a tranquil and quiet experience wandering through the market places. The fish markets back home where I come from are a bustling and stinky affair, but not here. Everything is beautifully presented , pristinely clean and calm. Then onto lunch. Kanae will teach you how to cook whatever you like and I had requested a seafood dish which turned out to be a lip smacking, umumsi bomb of home style salmon, spinach, miso and dashi. Will be cooking this at home. We loved our day! Highly recommend this activity. Thank you Kanae for a great day!!!!

My friends and I had the best time with Kanae on the local markets tour and cooking class. Her English is very good and she is very kind, thoughtful, and interesting, answering our many questions. She is also a wonderful cook and taught us to make several delicious local cuisine dishes in her home. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with her.

Hokkaido Seafood Dish

Kanae picked us up in her car at the subway station and drove to a local seafood market. She spoke very good English and was very friendly and helpful. We learned about all the different kinds of Hokkaido crabs and edible seaweeds. There was fresh giant Octopus and Scallops at the market. Back at her modern hillside home, she showed us how to prepare miso soup and spinach with crushed sesame seeds from scratch. The main dish was baked Hokkaido salmon with assorted vegetables and a miso paste sauce. It was delicious 😋.
