Itinerary
The Holsten Gate is Lübeck's landmark and one of the most popular sights. In the 15th century, the city gate was part of the city fortifications that defended Lübeck from attacks. With its imposing towers and brick construction, it is a symbol of the history and wealth of the Hanseatic city.
Next to the Holsten Gate we find the Lübeck salt warehouses, all of which were built between 1579 and 1745. The salt that was stored here at that time made Lübeck rich. The walk along the salt warehouses on the Trave River is a journey into the past.
We take a 60-minute boat tour on the Trave, which is an important river and flows through Lübeck. With its calm and picturesque course, the Trave is a popular destination for boat trips. From the boat you can watch the lively hustle and bustle in the harbor and the ships passing by. There are cozy bars and nice restaurants right on the Trave. Passing lovingly restored half-timbered houses, small shops, cozy cafes and alleys and courtyards. Here, away from the main streets, we will experience the unique atmosphere of old Lübeck up close.
The Old Town Island In 1987, Lübeck's old town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic city center is called the "Old Town Island" because it is located on a large "island" surrounded by water on all sides. Here we find around 1,800 listed buildings, quaint passageways, alleys and backyards.
Officially the cathedral of Lübeck and an example of North German brick Gothic architecture. Its history begins in the 12th century. Over the following centuries there were various construction phases and changes, which culminated in its current imposing appearance. Inside you will find magnificent vaults, altars and works of art.
Lübeck Market Square, Medieval main artery. The medieval Lübeck Market Square is the center of the historic old town. Markets are held here regularly, where you can try delicacies.
The Holy Spirit Hospital is an ancient building with a long history of social commitment and care for the needy. It was founded in the 13th century and is one of the oldest and largest hospitals in Europe.
The church was built around 1170 and is one of the highlight of every visit to Lübeck. We recommend the view from the church's viewing platform: from a height of 50 meters you can see the entire old town.
St. Mary's Church is a prime example of North German brick Gothic architecture. Built between 1277 and 1351 and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lübeck's Old Town. The two towers of St. Mary's Church are an impressive 125 meters high, the roof turret is 60 meters high and can be climbed as part of a tour. The interior features impressive artistic altars, magnificent stained glass windows and a majestic organ.

The Schiffergesellschaft, a former guild house, is a sociable meeting place, dates back to the beginnings of commercial shipping and was originally compulsory for all sailors in the Hanseatic city. When membership fees ended around 150 years ago, the Schiffergesellschaft became what it is today: a traditional, Hanseatic restaurant with modern cuisine and a historical ambience. We had a wonderful time getting to visit Lübeck and Hamburg with out guide. He was very knowledgeable about the areas and courteous with our requests. We would definitely recommend this tour to everyone!! Thanks Dustin and Devon
Heiko was fabulous and was a great tour guide. He showed us all the sights of Hamburg city plus many things that are not included on the regular city tours. He was very pleasant and friendly and went out of his way to see that we saw the city of Hamburg and enjoyed our visit in Hamburg. He was so good that we made arrangement with him for the next day to be driven to York and Steinkirchen and see the sights of those towns.. Again, he was an excellent tour guide. I recommend him for anyone requesting a private tour of Hamburg.
Our tour guide was Heiko. He's a local and a tour guide for Big Black Car Tours Our tour was of all the nooks in Hamburg and the small town of Luneburg which is 45 minutes outside of Hamburg. Heiko met us at the cruise terminal in a black Lincoln Navigator, the only one in Hamburg. He took us past the Red light district, the St. Pauli district, the original town center, St. Michael's and a few other churches. One church that was bombed in WWII has been left as a tribute to those lost in war. We also stopped at a city park where Heiko treated us to sparkling wine and cheese. Next he took us to a little hole in the wall for an authentic German lunch (Imbiss) It was a spicy sausage in a homemade tomato sauce and potato salad. My first time eating this and it was very good. After lunch we went to the small village of Luneburg via the autobahn. We walked around the village and saw a very picturesque village. There is a small stream running through town, a foot bridge with 'love locks'. It was well worth the time it took to get there. We did not go to Lubeck so we could spend more time in Hamburg and Luneburg. At our request we were dropped off at Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg. This is a whole warehouse full of miniature railroads, scenes, and so much more. Worth every penny for the tour. It took us about an hour to walk back to the ship along the waterfront.

The driver/guide was fantastic! The vehicle was very comfortable, and the itinerary was good. All I. all, it was a fabulous excursion.
