Private Half Day Tour of the Battlefields of the Somme Offensive

Description
This is a Somme offensive introductory tour. Visit some of the key sites and memorials as your guide describes the events surrounding this pivotal phase of the war on the western front. Reflect and pay your respects to the soldiers from many nations who fought here over one hundred years ago. As this is a half day tour why not start or end your day with a visit to the town of Albert with its restaurants , shops (except Monday) and Somme 1916 Museum. We only operate private tours, this will be your tour and adapted as necessary to meet your needs during the time. If you have any special sites, such as areas that involved your relatives, please ask as we are keen to adapt the tour specifically for you. With our years of living and working on these iconic sites we aim to ensure you leave with memories of the sacrifice of a generation. Given suitable notice time and the availability of records we are able to research and prepare a bespoke tour to cover an individual soldier or unit.

I highly recommend this battlefield tour with Alison. It was great to be shown around by someone who is so passionate about history and has such a deep knowledge of the war and Australia's involvement in it. We got so much more out of the experience than we would have on our own. Alison shared fascinating stories and insights throughout the tour and we really enjoyed the discussions we had with her along the way. Our teenage daughter came with us and enjoyed it too. The information Alison shared was interesting and relevant to her. Overall, it was a really enjoyable and informative tour, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.Provide your feedback on BizChat
Thank you, I really do appreciate receiving such kind reviews
An outstanding and deeply moving tour of the Somme with Jon from Old Blighty Tours. His incredible knowledge, storytelling and ability to explain the events of 1916 brought the battlefield to life. Visiting the trenches, cemeteries and key locations while hearing the personal stories behind them made this an unforgettable experience. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to understand the history and sacrifice of the Somme.
Thank you from Jon for taking time to write a very kind review
This was a thoroughly enjoyable tour with Alison, an extremely knowledgeable and engaging guide. We could never have seen and learnt so much had we tried to find and visit the locations ourselves. The arrangements were faultless, we were picked up at the station in Albert as arranged and then dropped off at the end of the tour. It was worth every penny and, without doubt, we would certainly recommend the tour. Many thanks Alison for a very memorable afternoon!
Thank you for your company and this very kind review, I truly appreciate them
Easy booking process and clear instructions for meeting Alison, my guide. An afternoon spent moving across the Somme battlefield, stopping at many places of interest. Alison shared her knowledge at each of these stops in an interesting and engaging way, and in chats whilst driving between sites. She even managed to find a point of interest from home as part of the tour. Really interesting and highly recommended.
Thank you so much for your company and lovey feedback, appreciated
Jon was amazing! So kind and knowledgeable and I learned so much. He kept us engaged and the 4 hours flew by. Thank you so much! It was incredible
Thank you so much for the feedback about Jon, very much appreciated by us both
Very good tour, get so much more information than trying to do it yourself, would recommend
Thanks for the recommendation, always appreciated
We enjoyed a super tour with Alison yesterday visiting several of the important monuments and battle fields of the Somme. Alison is well-informed and gave us an interesting insight to all aspects of the Somme region during our trip.
Thank you so much for taking the time to respond, I really do appreciate knowing that I am giving the experience I hope to
It’s hard to sum up in words how fantastic the tour was. John was so knowledgeable and even added extras to the tour which we didn’t expect. There was literally nothing that John didn’t know and his passion for this era of history was second to none. We loved visiting the various memorials and being taken to places where people would not usually visit. I told him I liked Sassoon poetry and he was kind enough to share a story about his friend David and he took us to see his memorial which was so thoughtful and kind. I’d thoroughly recommend this to anyone who wants to find out about the Battle of the Somme. Thank you John for a fantastic experience and we hope to see you again for another experience next year!
Thank you for taking the time to write these very kind words about Jon. I am so glad to hear that is genuine care and understanding of this subject comes over so well All the best Alison
This tour was perfect for us. Allison (who lives locally but is originally from the UK) was friendly and extremely knowledgeable and as it is a private tour she adapts it to whatever your interest level is and contacts you beforehand to find out if you want to visit any particular memorial or trace a particular person. In the half day tour we saw the sights we wanted to see and gained a much better understanding of the terrain where the battles took place, some of the tactics and strategies of WW1, and of the terrible loss of life. The time flew by. Of course it does mean that you cannot spend very long at each site because of the time limits so if you want a more in depth look, you will need to book a longer tour. We travelled to Albert in the morning by train from Lille, and spent time in the Somme museum in Albert and also in the Notre Dame Basilica before having lunch and then meeting Allison for the tour. This worked well for us. Thank you to Allison for this memorable tour.
And thank you for this very kind review. I really don't take them for granted and appreciate people taking the time to write them thanks again Alison
Relaxed and very informative tour, visiting many key sites, and ability to adapt if need be. It absolutely ticked off some of my bucket list. Also helped with guide being of British background. Highly recommend.
Thank you so much for this kind review All the best Alison
