Wat Phra Chetuphon (commonly known as Wat Pho) is one of the oldest and largest temples in Bangkok, located near the Grand Palace. It is famous for housing the Reclining Buddha (Phra Buddhasaiyas), a massive statue that stretches 46 meters long and is covered in gold leaf. The Reclining Buddha represents the Buddha’s entry into Nirvana, symbolizing the end of suffering and the attainment of enlightenment. Wat Pho is also a center of traditional Thai massage, and the temple is often referred to as the birthplace of Thai massage. Visitors can explore the temple grounds, which are beautifully landscaped and contain more than 1,000 Buddha images, as well as several large chedis (stupas), each dedicated to a different king. The temple complex is known for its impressive architecture, featuring beautiful murals, intricate carvings, and a peaceful atmosphere.

Admission included60 min

The Grand Palace in Bangkok is a stunning historical complex that served as the official residence of the Kings of Thailand from 1782 until 1925. Located on the Chao Phraya River, it features intricate architecture, beautiful gardens, and impressive buildings, including the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew). The palace is a symbol of Thailand's royal heritage and a major cultural and tourist landmark. Visitors can explore its ornate halls, courtyards, and the sacred Emerald Buddha statue, which is one of Thailand's most revered religious artifacts.

Admission included20 min

The Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) is one of Thailand's most sacred and revered temples, located within the grounds of the Grand Palace in Bangkok. It is home to the Emerald Buddha, a highly revered statue carved from a single block of jade, which is believed to bring prosperity and protection to the country. The temple is known for its stunning architecture, with intricately designed walls, golden stupas, and ornate decorations. The temple complex features beautiful murals depicting scenes from the Buddha's life and Thai history. Visitors can explore the temple grounds, view the Emerald Buddha from the main chapel, and admire the intricate craftsmanship of the temple's architecture. The temple is an important site for royal ceremonies, and visitors are required to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, as a sign of respect. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is a must-see cultural and spiritual destination in Bangkok.

Admission included40 min

The Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun) is one of Bangkok's most iconic landmarks, located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. Known for its stunning architectural design, Wat Arun features a central spire (prang) that rises 70 meters high, beautifully decorated with colorful porcelain and seashells. This spire is a symbol of Mount Meru, the center of the universe in Buddhist cosmology. The temple was originally built in the Ayutthaya period but was later renovated during the reign of King Rama II and King Rama III. Wat Arun is especially breathtaking at sunset and when lit up at night, offering a spectacular view from across the river. Visitors can climb part of the central spire for a panoramic view of the surrounding area, including the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. Inside the temple, you’ll find serene Buddha statues, intricate murals, and beautiful reliefs that depict scenes from Thai and Buddhist mythology. .

60 min

The Amulet Market in Bangkok, located near Wat Phra Chetuphon (Wat Pho), is a popular market that specializes in the sale of Buddhist amulets, charms, and religious artifacts. It is one of the largest markets of its kind in Thailand and attracts both locals and tourists looking for spiritual items and good luck charms. The market is filled with small stalls offering a wide range of amulets, from inexpensive ones to rare and highly sought-after pieces, often featuring depictions of Buddha, revered monks, and other religious symbols. Many Thais believe that these amulets have protective powers, bring good fortune, and ward off bad luck. The amulets are often made of various materials, including clay, metal, and wood, and some are even encased in gold or silver. In addition to amulets, the market also sells other religious items such as incense, candles, and small statues of Buddha.

Viator for the win!

Kate and driver Mike did a great job navigating the 3 Buddhist temples in time to get us back to the Michelin rated pork noodle shop near our hotel before they closed. She was very knowledgeable. We were also able to see how the country mourns. The president’s mother had just passed. I was touched by the high level of respect shown to the family. I’ve used Viator all over the world and have never been disappointed.

Private Half-Day Tour of Bangkok

Don't hesitate and pull the trigger. We were originally going to plan a self-guided tour of Bangkok's major sites on our own, but decided against it, given our age and we don't speak the local language. We also didn't want a group experience, being put together with strangers we may or may not get along with. So we opted for a private tour. Our guide, Ketsiree (aka Kate), was wonderful. She was on time for pick-up, explained each stop thoroughly, and even threw in a "to die for" coconut ice cream treat. She also acted as our "camera man", not needing to struggle with selfies. Also, having a private driver chauffeuring us from location to location in an air conditioned car was a godsend. I've seen walking tours posted and maybe those are okay for those in their 20s and 30s, but we're in our 60s. This tour and tour guide are highly recommended.

Great tour of Bangkoks historical treasures.

We had a great tour, our guide Kit was super attentive making sure we were ok, he answered all of our many questions. It was a very hot day as it typically is in Thailand and a good portion of this tour is walking outside. I recommend going as early as possible to avoid the direct sun and bring a sun umbrella.

Operator response

Thank you for sharing your experience! We're glad Kit was attentive and helpful throughout your tour, answering all your questions. You make a great point about the heat—starting early and bringing a sun umbrella can definitely make a big difference. We appreciate your recommendation and hope you had a wonderful time exploring Thailand!

Great Tour!!

The tour was so amazing!! We got picked up at hotel before heading to the temples. Our guide, Lala was incredibly knowledgeable and kind! She took the time to explain and answer our questions. We learned a lot and we also loved having a quick stop for ice cream especially with the heat. Our driver was great as well. Overall, a great tour.

We're delighted to hear that Lala’s knowledge and kindness made your temple tour so enjoyable, and that the ice cream stop was a perfect treat in the heat. It’s great to know the driver also contributed to a smooth experience. We truly appreciate your feedback and hope to welcome you on another great tour soon!

Solo traveller

My guide, Ketsiree really knew her history and knowledge. English was good too. She was clear with what to do and instructions were good. It would have been helpful prior to going to know that women must wear a dress to enter some of the temples. That is my only negative. I felt safe at all times and felt being a solo traveller this was a great option. Driver was female and lovely as well.

Operator response

Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughtful feedback! We're delighted to hear that you had a great experience with Ketsiree — she's truly passionate about sharing her knowledge, and we're glad her clear communication and guidance helped you feel confident throughout the tour. We're also happy to know that you felt safe and comfortable, especially as a solo traveler — your comfort and peace of mind are very important to us. Thank you for mentioning the dress code for temple visits; we completely understand how helpful it is to have that information in advance, and we'll be sure to highlight it more clearly for future guests. We appreciate your time in sharing your experience and hope to welcome you back on another adventure soon!
