The Zaanse Schans is a beautiful preservation village with a variety of historical houses, warehouses, and working industrial windmills. It feels like you’re traveling back in time! You will experience how life was between the 18th and 19th centuries. We’ll enjoy a pleasant stroll passing the old wooden houses with their preserved original details, like ceremonial doors and carved lintels, a visit to a working windmill, concluding with a traditional handcraft demonstration of making clogs.
Wooden shoe craft demonstration. Always wanted to know how a clog is being made? Join the wooden shoe craft demonstration and find out. In the clog museum we will tell you everything about clogs. You can even try or buy a pair of wooden shoes!
A visit to the last paint mill in the world “De Kat”. It was originally built in 1781. It is an octagonal mill with a rotating cap and external gallery. Since its restoration and partial rebuild in 1960 it has been fitted out to grind couloring materials as pigments. After a explanation how the windmill works, you have the opportunity to climb up the windmill and make beautiful pictures on the external gallery.
We’ll head to The famous cheese town of Edam. In Edam, we’ll take a stroll in the old centre and visit Henry Willig’s cheese shop to have a Gouda & Edam cheese tasting. They rank among the top 10 cheesemakers globally. If you’re a cheese lover… you’ll be in cheese heaven! They have 30 flavors and develop the cheeses specifically for travel.
Lunch time, You can choose where you want to have lunch. As locals, we know a lot of nice places. Whether it’s at a local fish restaurant or just a snack, in Volendam you will have lots of choices.
A walk through Volendam, which is known as the most popular fishing village in Holland. The charm of Volendam rests in its harbour and the authentic fishermen’s houses. The maze is the oldest part of Volendam. This is where we’ll see small fishermen’s houses and narrow streets. What’s unique about the maze is that the houses were built without any street pattern. We’ll take a small stroll in the maze and on the famous dike of Volendam.

Our last day in Amsterdam was spent on a delightful tour of the Holland countryside. Esther was the best guide for our couple group of six. We were on a Rhine River cruise from Switzerland to Amsterdam before our stay in Amsterdam. Ester gave us a real sense of a way of life as a wooden shoe wearing proud working family! We had a cheese tour, city tour including wind mill workings. Fish restaurant delicacies & the quaint town of Edam! You won’t be disappointed!
Thank you so much, Regena, for your lovely review! I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed the countryside and the stories about our history, the windmills, clogs and the tastings. You’re always welcome to join another tour anytime! Warm regards, Esther
