Mirisawetiya Dagaba, built by the legendary King Dutugamunu

Mirisawetiya Dagaba, a magnificent structure built by the legendary King Dutugamunu in the 1st century BCE, is a part of the Mahavihara Complex. This incredible king, known for his bravery and leadership, defeated the Tamil invaders who had ruled the country for three decades, uniting the land under one ruler. Imagine this: on the seventh day of Anuradhapura being reinstated as the capital of Lanka after the defeat of Elara, the Indian invader who had held power for 55 years, King Dutugamunu led a grand procession to Tissa Wewa for an aquatic festival. Dressed in his royal attire and carrying his imperial sceptre containing a sacred relic of Buddha, the king placed his belongings near the water. To everyone's amazement, the sceptre became stuck in the ground and could not be moved. Taking this as a divine sign, the king decided to build a stupa on that very spot to house the sceptre. In just three years, the stupa and its surrounding structures were completed. The king then hosted a grand inauguration ceremony, attended by thousands of monks from Sri Lanka and India, lasting seven days. Mirisawetiya Dagaba stands as a testament to King Dutugamunu's devotion and the miraculous events that led to its creation. It is truly a marvel to behold, the first of many great stupas to grace the land.
