Visit the Arataki Visitor Centre at the gateway to Te Wao Nui o Tiriwa, the great forest of the Maori Ancestor Tiriwa, also known as the Waitakere Ranges. Witness spectacular ocean vistas of both the Manukau Harbour and along Auckland’s wild West Coast. Get up close to some of New Zealand’s unique indigenous flora and fauna. View soaring cliffs, roaring surf and spectacular volcanic black sand beaches. Discover ancient native rainforest including our New Zealand Christmas Trees (Pohutukawa), Nikau Palms, our national icon the Silver Fern. Stand in front of a huge, 1000 year-old Kauri tree, a giant of the forest, before travelling on to the wine-growing region of Kumeu with its 65 wineries plus fruit stalls and restaurants. Here you can choose to have lunch at one of the superb wineries and of course also taste the wine!

We had some very questionable weather. Our guide Curtis picked us up right on time and we headed to the West Coast. As we started the first walk, Curtis was unsatisfied with the experience we would have. So he picked another that was not impacted by the fog and was gorgeous - a waterfall in a beautiful valley with very interesting history. After lunch, the bad weather persisted and Curtis changed the entire trip on the fly to one featuring the volcanos of Aukland, a huge Kauri tree, Western Springs and endangered eels and beautiful swans and the best tour of Auckland I can imagine. It takes a really great guide to give you such an incredible day in bad weather. We now want to move here!
The owners (husband and wife) picked us up in 2 clean, very nice vans at our hotel in Auckland and we sit out for the coast. The drivers were friendly and knowledgeable and treated us to a wonderful easy hike and a couple of really nice beaches. They had snacks and lunch was delicious at a local spot. Highly recommend if you’re looking for very personal service.
