Ouchi-juku opened along the Aizu Nishi Kaido route around 1643. It flourished as a base for routes going from Aizu domain to Nikko Kaido and Edo (Tokyo). The most convenient way to reach Ouchi-juku is to use a rental car from Aizuwakamtasu City. Head south on National Route 121 and take the Prefectural Road 329 going along the mountain stream.

We had a lovely day with our guide Nobuko. She shared lots of interesting stories about the life in old Japan and explained everything to us. She also had many trivia to keep us engaged and answered all our questions. We went to Ouchi-juku first and had lunch there (the local buckwheat noodles). Because we chose to do it all by taxi instead of public transportation we had some extra time so we visited Tsuruga Castle and the Samurai House in Aizuwakamatsu. Finally she left us at Sazaedo Temple.
Thank you very much for your kind and heartwarming review. I truly appreciated that you stopped by Aizu during your long journey and showed interest in its history and culture. It was a pleasure sharing explanations and having conversations with you—I also had a wonderful time. You two are very lovely. I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip. Nobuko
This tour was amazing thanks to Yoko!! We had a lot of fun traveling to Ochijuku with her by train starting in Aizu, talking about the area and history of Fukushima on the way and discovering the small town's shops and homes in the end. Highly recommend, we will come back to do other tours with her :)
Thank you for your review and pretty photos (especially the black cat surrounded by cat dolls and you three having sweets are cute.). I am so glad you enjoyed the tour of Ouchijuku. I had a great time too. Please come back to see Fukushima's nature and history, and taste local foods. P.S.: I found out that there are a few confectionery stores that sell Ichigo Daifuku all year round. Look for them next time! Yoko
