Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street is a must-visit in Osaka. This giant shopping arcade of cosmetics stores, apparel shops, and restaurants extends 600 meters. This has been a bustling center of retail since the mid-18th century when famed kimono shop Matsuya opened what later became Daimaru Department Store. The development of Shinsaibashi-suji parallels the growth and change in its host city Osaka . Walk down Shinsaibashi-suji to experience Japan's love of consumer retail. You can walk south down Shinsaibashi-suji to reach the neon-lit Dotonbori Bridge!

Osaka's Sumiyoshi Taisha (住吉大社, "Sumiyoshi Grand Shrine") is one of Japan's oldest shrines. Founded in the 3rd century before the introduction of Buddhism, it displays a unique style of shrine architecture, called Sumiyoshi-zukuri, that is free of influence from the Asian mainland. Only two other shrine architecture styles are also considered purely Japanese: Shinmei-zukuri as seen at the Ise Shrines and Taisha-zukuri as seen at Izumo Taisha.

Shitennoji (四天王寺, Shitennōji) is one of Japan's oldest temples and the first ever to be built by the state. It was founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, who supported the introduction of Buddhism into Japan. Although the temple's buildings burned down several times throughout the centuries, they were always carefully reconstructed to reflect the original 6th century design. The outer temple grounds are free to enter, but admission to the inner precinct, the Gokuraku-jodo Garden and the treasure house is paid. In the pebble covered courtyard of the inner precinct stand a five-storied pagoda that can be entered and ascended and the Main Hall (Kondo) in which Prince Shotoku is enshrined as a statue of Kannon.

The 173 meter tall building consists of two towers that are connected with each other by the "Floating Garden Observatory" on the 39th floor. The observatory offers great views of the city through its windows and from its open-air deck. In the basement, there is a restaurant floor that replicates a town of the early Showa Period, while offices occupy most other floors.

Osaka Customized Half-Day Tour with Licensed Local Guide

We spent half a day with Sachiko Ogura seeing the Osaka castle, the garden on 16th floor, Sumiyoshi Taisha shrine and Dotonbori. Sachiko was on time (in fact, early:-) and well prepared (we have communicated in advance) and gave us an excellent tour. She can be highly recommended!

Operator response

Thank you very much for your kind review! I’m happy to hear that you enjoyed Osaka despite the heat, which I know must have been challenging for you coming from a Nordic country. Please visit us again for the Sakura ! Sachiko

Throughout the tour, Emi was so kind, knowledgable, positive, and flexible - we enjoyed every second and are so grateful she was the person that showed us beautiful Osaka. Strongly recommend Emi and this tour if you're planning a trip to Osaka!

A beautiful tour with lacking language skills

Even if English is not the main language in Japan, the guide should still be able to comment on the tour not only professionally, but also in the desired language without limitations.

Great tour! Great guide!

Sachi was a great guide. She customized our tour for us and even made a last minute adjustment due to the rain and switched us to an indoor activity to visit the Japanese museum of living which was gave us a very nice insight on how the Japanese lived way back when. She’s very knowledgeable and was able to answer any questions we had. She also went out of her way to make sure our kids also enjoyed the tour. What really impressed me was that she never sat down or rested during the whole tour. Even on the train, she didn’t sit down!

Operator response

Thank you so much for the wonderful review! I'm truly grateful for your flexibility with the sudden schedule change due to the rain. I was also impressed by how you always prioritized your family member's wishes. By the way, how was the sushi on your last night in Japan? Sachiko

A wonderful time!

We absolutely loved this tour. Yama was attentive, was filled with interesting facts, and he also took us a few areas that were not as full of tourists. He seemed to enjoy his work which made it really fun for us. Absolutely a kind and knowledgeable guide, I would highly recommend him to anyone visiting Osaka for the first time.

Operator response

I appreciate your most kind and considerate comment. I am very much glad to know you have enjoyed the tour with me. I have also had a very happy time with you two. I am sure that the three stones of Go Dai Riki at Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine will make your wish and dream come true soon. In such case, you need to come back there, you remember? Ha ha ha! I do hope I can see you again, maybe in my city of Kobe and guide you to the home of Japanese Sake breweries. Doomo Arigato Gozaimashita. - Yama

Thank you for your kind comment! I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed our tour. I also enjoyed it, too. We were lucky enough that Osaka Castle was not so crowded that we enjoyed it to the fullest. I was also glad you liked the lively atmosphere of the Dotonbori area. I hope ours will be one of the most memorable tours in Japan, and you’ll visit this country again soon. Thank you so much. A memorable experience!

Wonderful experience with an amazing guide! Ms. Sachiko Ogura, a kind, respectful, and knowledgeable guide made our 4-hour tour efficient and interesting. We visited several places including the Osaka castle. She provided detailed information on the places we visited in addition to attractions along the way. I highly recommend her to everyone who desires the best exposure to Osaka.

Operator response

Thank you so much for your lovely review! I also feel incredibly lucky that we could enjoy Osaka together on a sunny day during the rainy season. I only hope that the rainy weather didn't affect your trips to Kyoto and Hiroshima too much. Take care and enjoy staying in Japan! Sachiko
