Located in the heart of Negombo's Sea Street, St. Sebastian’s Church is a striking Neo-Gothic Catholic church inspired by the Notre Dame Cathedral. Built in the early 20th century, it reflects the city's strong Portuguese and Dutch colonial influences. Admire its stained glass windows, soaring spires, and peaceful atmosphere. Visit in January for the vibrant St. Sebastian’s Feast, a major local religious celebration.
Sri Singama Kali Amman Kovil is one of Negombo’s most vibrant Hindu temples, dedicated to the powerful goddess Kali. Located near the town center, this colorful Dravidian-style temple is adorned with intricate statues, vibrant carvings, and detailed shrines. Visitors can witness traditional rituals, offerings, and occasional festivals that bring the temple to life with music, incense, and devotion. A peaceful yet energizing cultural experience.
St. Mary’s Church is one of the largest and most beautiful churches in Sri Lanka, located in the heart of Negombo. Built during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this Roman Catholic church is known for its impressive Baroque architecture and vibrant ceiling frescoes that depict scenes from the life of Christ. A peaceful space for reflection, it also offers insight into Negombo’s deep-rooted Christian heritage and colonial past.
The Dutch Fort in Negombo is a historic remnant of Sri Lanka’s colonial past, originally built by the Portuguese in the 17th century and later expanded by the Dutch. Though only the gate and outer walls remain today, the fort offers a glimpse into European influence in coastal Sri Lanka. Located near the lagoon and canal, it’s a quick yet meaningful stop for history lovers exploring Negombo’s heritage and old-world charm.
Located at the edge of Sea Street, this beachside fish market offers a raw and authentic glimpse into daily coastal life. Watch fishermen return from the Indian Ocean at dawn with their fresh catch, often sold right on the sand. It’s a quieter alternative to the main fish market, perfect for early risers, photographers, and anyone wanting to experience traditional fishing culture up close in a scenic beach setting.
The Negombo Dry Fish Processing Area offers a unique insight into one of Sri Lanka’s traditional industries. Located along the coastal stretch, this area is where freshly caught fish are cleaned, salted, and sun-dried on large mats. Visitors can observe the entire process, interact with local workers, and learn about preservation methods passed down through generations. It’s an authentic cultural stop for those interested in food heritage and local livelihoods.
Negombo Lagoon is a serene coastal waterway rich in biodiversity and local life. Surrounded by mangroves and fishing villages, the lagoon is home to a variety of birds, fish, and crabs. Visitors can enjoy boat rides, birdwatching, and see traditional fishing methods in action. It's a peaceful escape from the busy town and offers an authentic glimpse into the daily rhythm of Negombo’s fishing communities and natural beauty.
The Dutch Canal in Negombo is a historic waterway built by the Dutch in the 17th century for transporting goods and spices. Stretching alongside the town and lagoon, the canal is now a scenic route for boat rides and a glimpse into colonial engineering. Lined with coconut palms and local life, it’s ideal for peaceful cruises, birdwatching, and understanding Negombo’s rich trade and fishing heritage.
Negombo City Centre is the vibrant heart of the town, where colonial charm meets modern-day Sri Lankan life. Bustling streets are lined with shops, markets, cafes, and historic buildings, making it perfect for walking tours and local exploration. Visitors can experience everyday culture, shop for souvenirs, taste street food, and visit landmarks like churches, temples, and colonial architecture—all within a lively urban setting.
Angurukaramulla Temple, also known as Bodhirajaramaya, is one of Negombo’s most important Buddhist temples. Famous for its giant seated Buddha statue and intricate murals, the temple offers a peaceful atmosphere and deep spiritual significance. A thorough and insightful morning tour of Negombo, with fantastic storytelling from Robin a local guide. The benefit is that he is a familiar face for everyone in the area, so you also get to have a chat with people in the markets and stalls. I got to understand the history and culture as well as its fishing traditions. The fish market was a big highlight and definitely a better experience with Robin who comes from a fishing family and can explain every part of the process. It was great to go by tuktuk taking in the sights and sounds too. I was well looked after the whole time and thoroughly recommend this for anyone wanting to learn more about Negombo.
