Nairobi: Hell's Gate Day Trip and Lake Naivasha Boat Ride

Description
This tour is unique because it combines water-based, cycling, walking, and wildlife experiences in a single day, something few destinations in Kenya offer. Tourists begin with a boat safari on Lake Naivasha, allowing close, uninterrupted viewing of hippos and prolific birdlife—an experience that contrasts sharply with traditional vehicle-only game drives. The transition to Hell’s Gate National Park then introduces a rare opportunity to cycle or walk inside a national park, moving at ground level among giraffes, zebras, and antelopes with no large predators present. The guided walk through Hell’s Gate Gorge, with its geothermal steam vents, towering cliffs, and volcanic formations, adds a strong adventure and geological dimension not found in most safari circuits. Scenic Rift Valley landscapes, hands-on activities, and lunch at a lakeside hotel complete a highly interactive, multi-sensory day trip that blends nature, adventure, and scenery rather than passive sightseeing alone.

Itinerary
Begin your day with an early morning pickup from your hotel or residence in Nairobi and enjoy a scenic drive along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway through the Great Rift Valley, stopping briefly at a panoramic viewpoint for photography and refreshments. On arrival at Lake Naivasha mid-morning, tourists will board a guided boat for a relaxed safari across the freshwater lake. During the cruise, you will watch hippos surfacing close to the boat, observe African fish eagles swooping down to catch fish, and identify pelicans, cormorants, herons, and other water birds along the shoreline. Your guide will explain the lake’s ecosystem, bird migration patterns, and the relationship between wildlife and surrounding communities. After the boat ride, you will disembark and enjoy time at the lakeshore, taking photos, stretching your legs, and appreciating the calm scenery before heading for lunch at Lake Naivasha Crescent Hotel, where you can relax and dine overlooking the lake.
After lunch, drive to Hell’s Gate National Park and receive a short briefing at the main gate on park rules, safety, and activities. Inside the park, tourists will experience one of Kenya’s most interactive parks by choosing to cycle through the open plains or enjoy a guided game drive. As you move through the park, you will see zebras, giraffes, warthogs, gazelles, and buffaloes roaming freely without predators. Continue to Hell’s Gate Gorge, where you will take a guided walk through dramatic rock formations, narrow canyons, geothermal steam vents, and hot springs while learning about volcanic activity and local geology. You will stop at iconic landmarks such as Fischer’s Tower and the Central Tower for photography and short nature walks. After completing the activities, exit the park in the afternoon and begin your return drive to Nairobi, arriving in the early evening.

What was included was not clear to me from the original information. It wasn't until I had booked and paid and then met the driver that I realized how much more I needed to pay to actually see Hell's Gate Park. Be very careful!
Hello Cytnhia, Thank you for sharing your feedback, and I’m truly sorry for the frustration you experienced. You are absolutely right to expect full clarity before booking. In this case, the confusion around the entry fees for Hell's Gate National Park should have been communicated more explicitly from our side. While our packages typically include transport and guiding services, park entrance fees are often paid separately directly to the park or are optional depending on the listing structure—but this distinction should never be unclear at the point of booking. We take your concern seriously and are currently reviewing how this information is presented to ensure future guests have a transparent breakdown of all inclusions and exclusions before payment is made. Your experience matters, and we appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

The place is wonderful, the attention too, however the food on this occasion was not so good... unfortunately I had no good seasoning and all the times I have been there I leave very satisfied. Please don't let it slide, it's a place I really like.
Hello dear traveler, Thank you for your feedback. We're glad you enjoyed the setting and the service, however, we are sorry the food didn't meet expectations this time. We will address this with the team to improve the food quality. We appreciate your patronage and hope to welcome you back again soon.
I enjoyed my time. I didn’t expect to see so many animals. It was an amazing adventure and the drive was short . I didn’t feel rushed and was able to have a zebra encounter

Perfect Organisation. We started on Time in the Morning from Nairobi to Hell‘s Gate. The bike Tour was awesome - spotting lots of animals in the park. Also on the boat we were able to check on the Hippos in Lake Naivasha.

Seeing the animals while cycling through the park was just the start. It is 8 km there and back but surface good and bikes in good repair. David our bike guide was informative and considerate.

I had a last minute opening in my schedule and managed to book this trip at night for the very next morning. Erick contacted me immediately and showed up on time. The day was incredible- we stopped along the way for gorgeous views of the valley, we went to Hell's Gate where a bike guide named David took me through Hell's Gate which was awesome. We did a bike ride in, a short hike then biked back. Gorgeous views. Then on to Lake Naivasha and a boat ride to see the hippos (you CAN pay extra to walk on Crescent Island but I didnt know that- will do that next time!). Honestly everyone was great- it was a perfect day trip and I couldn't be happier with my guide Erick!!
Thank you so much IRRIN for taking the time to leave us a review, we are delighted to know that you had a memorable experience with our guide throughout the day. we welcome you to explore different experiences in the future.
It was clear that there was no cash payment on the spot. We ended up paying 150 kr. extra because we had to withdraw at a nearby ATM
Dear Traveler, thank you for taking your time and leave us this review, i wonder why you are lying because you only paid bike and bout ride which costed only $30 per person. i would like let you know that it is well detailed very well that boat ride and bikes are managed by local people and they do not accept card payment but only cash.
