Optional: Guide to Hakone's Volcanic Owakudani Owakudani was formed about 3,000 years ago by an explosive eruption and collapse of the Hakone volcano's central cone, Mount Kamiya. It was originally named "Jigokudani" or "Hell Valley" due to its volcanic activity and sulfurous fumes. The name was changed to Owakudani, meaning "Great Boiling Valley," in 1873 when the Emperor Meiji visited.
Optional: The Hakone-jinja shrine dates back to 757. Many military commanders prayed at this shrine devotedly, which brought it fame throughout the country. Another group of worshippers were travelers who regularly visited the Hakone area, and often came here to pray for a safe trip.
