Meteora is an area that covers few square kilometers, where an ancient monastic community and a rare geological phenomenon of huge rock pillars coexist in absolute harmony. Located at the northwest tip of the plain of Thessaly, Meteora today has become one of the most popular destinations of mainland Greece. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an archeological site and an officially declared holy place! At the foothills of the rocks, there are 2 settlements, the town of Kalabaka and the village of Kastraki.
Hike through the majestic 'rock forest' of Meteora, see the best monasteries and experience the most captivating views on this morning tour. The Meteora Hiking Tour is one of the best ways to enjoy this unique geological phenomenon and to learn the history of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. By joining this morning hike you will walk through hidden trails that only locals know. Let us take you on a journey back in time following the footsteps of the first monks who arrived here more than 15 centuries ago. Join this amazing guided hiking tour and walk among the gigantic rock pillars of Meteora to enjoy truly breathtaking views.
The Great Meteoron Monastery is the biggest and oldest one of all. It was called the monastery that was “suspended in the air” (meteoro), because of the formation of the gigantic rock on top of which it was built. The Great Meteoro Monastery was founded by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite who was the first founder of the monastery and the organizer of the systematic koenovion. For this reason, the foundation of this monastery is considered to be a turning point, or even better, the beginning of the organized monastisicm in Holy Meteora. Hosios Athanasios was born around 1302 in the medieval town of New Patras, today’s Hypati and his lay name was Andronikos.
Fully constructed inside a large cavity of a rock, this monastery is very indicative of its kind, compared to the ones that are usually seen on the peaks of rocks. A monk under the name of Nilos, in the year 1367 AD, along with another monk named Cyprianus became the founders and the owners of the monastery. It was destroyed in 1809, when the local rebel and hero Papathymios Vlahavas was arrested here by the Turkish army of Ali Pasha. The pathway to this monastery is a very simple and pleasant one.
he Holy Monastery of Varlaam is the second biggest monastery. It is located opposite of the Great Meteoro Monastery and it was founded in the mid 14th century by the exercitant Hosios Varlaam. The elegant monastery Catholicon was built in the honour of Agioi Pantes in 1541-42, by two brothers from Ioannina, the priest-monks Hosioi Theophanes and Nectarios the Apsarades. The main church was decorated in 1548. Based on stylistic criteria, this magnificent wall-painting is attributed to the famous hagiographer from Thebes, Frago Catelano.
The Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Anapafsas is the first Monastery that we encounter on our way to the Holy Meteora and was founded at the end of the 14th century. For the name Anapafsas there are numerous interpretations two of which are the most popular. The first one is that the name Anapafsas was attributed by one of the monastery’s benefactors, while the second explanation has to do with the monastery’s position being the first to be encountered on the way up and probably served to the pilgrims and other visitors as a resting place before continuing on.

Our family recently visited Greece, and one of the highlights of our trip was a small-group hiking tour with Visit Meteora. Our guide, Hristo, was exceptionally friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. His English was impeccable, and he even spoke some French. He shared fascinating insights about the history, flora, and fauna of the region, which made the hike even more engaging. Chris led our group on this hike and it was my favourite experience in Meteora! Beautiful countryside and views of the monasteries and the hike was fairly easy, some steep and slippery spots but it was a perfect experience if you love hiking and nature as well as the stunning views, and want to visit the largest monastery as well.

It was a magical half-day walk into a dreamlike landscape of colors, scents, shapes, and history. The trail network is vast, like a natural maze—definitely something you shouldn’t explore without a local guide, as it’s easy to get lost. Our guide Chris was fluent in English, kind, and very knowledgeable, answering every question with ease. The trail itself was easy, yet offered breathtaking views throughout.

We had a very enjoyable experience, guided by Chris, who was very well-informed in his knowledge of the history of the area, the monasteries and the flora and fauna en route. As we were the only people on the tour, we also enjoyed the personal conversation en route! The path was not difficult or too strenuous and the scenic views were stunning. The monastery was worth the visit too.

And of course, we’re happy the monastery visit was a highlight as well. We truly appreciate your recommendation and hope to welcome you back again soon!
Wonderful hike with a very experienced and entertaining guide (whose name I unfortunately can’t recall). He gave us lots of information about the area and made me feel every safe. The hike was about 7.5 miles, with about 1300 feet elevation gain, and stopped at some beautiful viewpoints. Highly recommend.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We’re thrilled to hear you enjoyed the hike and felt safe and well-guided throughout the experience. Our guides are truly passionate about sharing the history, nature, and hidden viewpoints of Meteora, and we’re glad that came through during your tour. 7.5 miles with 1,300 feet of elevation is a great achievement — well done! We truly appreciate your recommendation and hope to welcome you back for another adventure in the future.
The weather did not show rain so we went on this hike. But that is not the case as we embarked on the hike. Our guide, Chris is one of the best tour guide so far. He came prepared for rain and we were well taken care of. He is very engaging with history, plants, politics and just a very knowledgeable person on lots of topics. Chris went out of his way to show us different sites and that makes the hike a much educational then just driving from point to point in a car. He also was very caring and would get our input whether we should continue since it is raining on and off. He lives in Kalambaka so he also knows where to get good lunch. I highly recommend him if you want to do the half day hike.
Dear Guest, Thank you so much for this wonderful and detailed review! We’re truly happy you chose to continue the hike despite the changing weather — sometimes a little rain makes Meteora even more magical. Chris will be especially proud to read your kind words. His passion for history, nature, and the local culture — along with his genuine care for guests — is exactly what we aim to offer on every hike. We’re delighted you found the experience educational and engaging, and not just a simple transfer between viewpoints. Thank you again for your recommendation, and we hope to welcome you back to Meteora — rain or shine! Warm regards, Visit Meteora Team
Chris's guide was amazing and it was more fun than I expected. It tells you everything about Meteora's religious background, as well as its history, topography, flora and fauna, and even spectacular photo spots. After all, I realized with the guide that there were only so many landscapes you could see without walking on your own feet. I was also very grateful to be able to borrow Paul on my way home.
Dear Guest, Thank you very much for your beautiful review! We’re truly happy to hear that Chris made your trekking experience in Meteora so memorable and enjoyable. We’re also glad the trekking poles were helpful on the way back! We hope to welcome you again for another unforgettable walk in Meteora. Warm regards, Visit Meteora Team
