Itinerary
Materuni is the home of the Chagga tribe and is still an authentic tribal village. This charming place is just 15km away from Moshi Town and is the last village before the Kilimanjaro National Park. First you will visit the waterfalls, which are around a 40-minute walk away. On the way, trail can be slippery & muddy best to have good hiking boots. The views are truly breathtaking, and with some luck you will see the summit of Kilimanjaro. When you reach the waterfalls, you will see that they are more than 80 meters high. The pool at the bottom of the waterfall is an inviting place for a refreshing swim so don‘t forget your swimwear! After having enjoyed the scenery, you slowly return with your guide to Materuni village, where you will experience a traditional Chagga lunch. You also will have the opportunity to taste our local banana beer – definitely not to be missed! Tip: Chagga tribesmen are Tanzania’s finest brewers
But that’s not all. Next the coffee experience awaits you. Here you will learn how coffee is cultivated, dried, roasted and further processed. You will also be invited to help with the grinding of the coffee, which is traditionally accompanied by Chagga songs and dances - a fun way to immerse yourself in the local culture. Before you say goodbye, you can savor the coffee you made and appreciate the views of the surrounding rainforest.
After the coffee tour in Materuni your trip continues to the Kikuletwa Hot Springs. The ride to the hot springs takes about an hour and 20 minutes and leads partly over bumpy slopes Enjoy a wonderful afternoon in just the way you want, in the sun dozing, chatting with the locals at the small bar, or swimming - you determine the course. We leave the hot springs in the late afternoon (just before sunset) and return relaxed to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. Note: have swimming wear & towels

We've had a delightful day with our guide Eddie. He was very nice from the beginning, he was on time for the pick up, and we have also learnt a lot about the culture. I would highly recommend this activity.
This day trip was a fun experience and included a hike, interactive coffee making demonstration, coffee tasting and lunch. You will want to take some coffee (organically grown) home with you. I took my elderly father, not realizing the hike would be a bit much for him; however, the guide was helpful and patient as he needed to walk carefully and slowly over the rough terrain. This would be a fun family day trip for those wanting to experience a tribal village and support their coffee enterprise.
I did this experience as the final day of my 8 day safari itinerary and it was a wonderful way to wrap up my trip. All of this was arranged through Safari Soles, the team there is amazing. Adelina did a fantastic job designing the activities and stays for my trip. She was able to answer all of my questions quickly and clearly. My guide for this Experience was named Innocent. He did an amazing job getting me around and communicating clearly with me in order to arrange pickup. Innocent has a fantastic personality and was also knowledgeable about the area and activities we were doing. Where he really did a good job was making me feel comfortable and safe throughout the day. He was extremely trustworthy and well equipped to handle all of the roads on this journey. I had a fantastic day with him and hope to see him one day on a future safari as a guide.
My Driver / Guide (Beny) was so amazing. He spoke and understood English very well. He told me all about the different tribe's / regions. I'm a solo traveler this trip and it was just me and the guilde. The hike was easy but if it was to rain 🌧️ (it didn't on my trip) it would make it a lot more difficult (for the car all dirt roads and the hiking) The waterfall was amazing and well worth the hike (the energy it creates was so magical) The drive are about 2 hours to the waterfall and 2 hours from the waterfall to the hot springs. The hot springs are beautiful and the water is crystal clear but the water is not hot.
We had an excellent visit to the waterfall and hot springs with Safari Soles. The hike and coffee tour were very enjoyable. The people working at the coffee kitchen were very friendly and good fun. The hike was great. The hot springs is very cool but there are a lot of people there trying to rent / sell things to you. Thankfully our guide warned us of this before so we knew what to expect. Our guide Innocent from Safari Soles was brilliant. He went above and beyond to ensure that we had a good day. He was kind, patient and helpful throughout the day and taught us a lot about the area and Kilimanjaro. Assante Innocent!
I have nothing but positive things to say about this experience! We were a family of 6 ranging in age from 12 to 70 years!! Starting off with our incredible guides, Innocent and Benson: they took great care of us and were professional, friendly, knowledgeable, and a true pleasure to spend the day with. They both were expert drivers on the very bumpy roads! The hike to the waterfall was wet and muddy but not too difficult if you took care with your steps. The provided rain boots were a must unless you have your own hiking boots. The coffee experience was delightful to the mind and palate! It was a great learning and cultural adventure. Lunch provided amazing food for vegetarians. The hot springs were a great end to a long day.
Thank you for your review, we are glad to hear that you and your family had a wonderful experience, and that your guides Innocent and Benson made you happy on your trip. We hope to welcome you back.
Our experience on this trip with Innocent and Benson was incredible. Our family ages range from 12 to 70 and the guides accommodated each of us with patience and grace. They genuinely cared about our well-being and happiness. They had rain boots on the ready, water, drinks for the ride, and helped navigate us in a slow and calm way. We spent a long day traveling to various sites and enjoyed a number of cultural experiences. Our guides were quick to answer our questions and seemed to know about everything we asked. It was truly a wonderful experience for our whole family.

The weather had been rainy and moved to heavy mist. I was wearing hiking boots, but should have rented rubber boots. The traction on the narrow red clay trails was treacherous. I fell several times. My daughter continued to the beautiful waterfall, while I stayed at the coffee plantation. Everyone was exceedingly kind.
An Unforgettable Day with an Amazing Guide! We had Benson as our guide today, and he was absolutely amazing! He did a fantastic job sharing the history of the local tribes and the rich culture around Arusha and Materuni. The hike to the Materuni waterfalls was incredible, followed by an awesome coffee-roasting experience. I never thought we would actually get to drink the exact coffee beans we just finished roasting ourselves—that was such a cool and unique highlight! We ended the day at the Kikuletwa Hot Springs, which is beautiful and was the perfect, refreshing way to wrap up a great day of activities. Benson, asante sana! We highly recommend booking a tour with him.

Lovely activity to throw on before or after a safari stint if you have a spare day in Arusha. In our case, this was our very first experience in Tanzania, and our fantastic guide Innocent provided us with the perfect introduction to the country. Not only did he take great care of us through the exhilarating waterfall hike and hot springs swim, but also fielded our numerous questions about our upcoming safari, introduced us to Tanzanian music (and music videos!) and taught us quite a few words in Swahili! Coffee tour and lunch were also great Roads will be bumpy, path may be muddy, and hot springs are not as “hot” as you’d expect, but it’s all part of the adventure.
