We enjoyed escaping the heat for our afternoon class in Asakusa. The class taught us about Japanese knives. We sharpened, tested (by cutting paper), practiced writing in Japanese in pencil, then wood-burned the handles, and finally polished our own knives. Mine is a yanagiba (a sushi knife; the basic) and we upgraded my husband’s to a deba (meat and bone) since we already own a Japanese Santoku (from Coutelier NOLA.) I chose to write my name on mine. The teachers were great; personable and professional. Their patience and guidance maintained a relaxed atmosphere. We also got to choose a fabric lining for our knives and care instructions were included in the tote bag. A little hard to find the entry at first but it’s located in an interesting and walkable district. After class we visited the Senso-ji shrine, and explored the surrounding area until dinner. We’re having a great time in Tokyo! ♥️🇯🇵🔪 Thanks to Harry and the team at the BUB center for a great cultural experience!

All in all it is a very cool experience! There is some history at the beginning, but it is mostly sharpening the blade and engraving your favorite word in Japanese on the handle. Very worth while when in Japan!
