Lesotho Highlands Tour: Horse Riding, Village Life & Scenic Views

Description
Unlike standard Sani Pass day trips that focus primarily on reaching the summit, this experience takes you beyond Sani Top and deeper into the heart of Lesotho. By travelling further into the highlands, you'll experience the real Mountain Kingdom — its landscapes, communities, and traditions — in a way that most visitors never do. With a choice between horseback exploration on traditional Basotho ponies or an extended cultural village experience, the tour offers a level of immersion rarely found on day trips. Combined with expert local guides, small-group travel, spectacular mountain scenery, and authentic interactions with local communities, this journey provides a richer and more meaningful experience of Lesotho. Whether you're seeking adventure, culture, photography, or a genuine connection with the people of the highlands, this tour delivers an unforgettable day in one of Southern Africa's most unique destinations.

Itinerary
Departing from Underberg or Himeville, your adventure begins in a specially equipped 4×4 vehicle as we travel towards the legendary Sani Pass. Following the Mkomazana River through the dramatic Sani Valley, you'll pass sandstone cliffs, mountain streams, waterfalls, and rolling grasslands that form part of the UNESCO-listed uKhahlamba-Drakensberg World Heritage Site. As the road climbs higher, your guide will share fascinating insights into the region's history, geology, wildlife, and the unique relationship between South Africa and Lesotho. After completing border formalities at the summit, we cross into the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho and continue beyond Sani Top into the remote highlands, where vast alpine landscapes and traditional mountain communities await.
Beyond the border, the journey continues deeper into Lesotho, far beyond the areas visited on standard Sani Pass tours. Rolling highland grasslands, grazing livestock, winding mountain roads, and traditional stone homesteads create a landscape unlike anywhere else in Southern Africa. Here, guests can choose between two immersive experiences. The Basotho Pony Riding Experience offers the opportunity to explore scenic mountain trails on the famous sure-footed Basotho ponies, a traditional form of transport that has been used for generations. Alternatively, the Village Immersion Experience provides extended time in a traditional Basotho community, where you'll learn about local customs, daily life, livestock farming, and cultural traditions while enjoying authentic mountain hospitality and freshly baked Basotho bread.
After your chosen experience, enjoy a scenic picnic lunch surrounded by the spectacular landscapes of the Lesotho Highlands. Relax, take in the fresh mountain air, and absorb the peaceful atmosphere of one of Africa's most remote mountain regions. Guests who would prefer to visit Africa's Highest Pub can request a customised itinerary in advance. Following lunch, we begin our return journey towards Sani Pass, with opportunities to stop for photographs and admire the dramatic scenery from new perspectives. The descent of Sani Pass offers a thrilling conclusion to the day, revealing breathtaking views of the valleys and mountains below. Arriving back in Underberg or Himeville in the late afternoon, you'll leave with a deeper understanding of Lesotho's people, culture, and remarkable mountain landscapes.

I had an amazing tour in Lesotho! Patrick was an incredible guide – super friendly, knowledgeable, and fun to be around. He shared so many interesting facts about the places we visited, and you can really tell he knows the area inside out. We were a small group of three, and I got along so well with the other travelers, which made the experience even better. The landscapes were absolutely breathtaking, and Patrick drove us safely and comfortably the entire time. Overall, everything was perfect. I had such a great time and would definitely join a tour with Patrick again. Highly recommended!
Thank you so much for the wonderful feedback! 😊 We’re thrilled to hear you had such an amazing time in Lesotho and that Patrick made the experience so special with his knowledge, great company, and safe driving. Small groups, great connections, and breathtaking landscapes are what it’s all about — we’ll be sure to pass this on to Patrick.
We had a memorable tour , full of adventure and tour guide provided us with the history of the area, our guide was very knowledgeable and polite, looking forward to our next trip
Thank you so much for your kind review. We are really glad to hear you had a memorable and adventurous tour, and that your guide could share the history of the area with you. We’ll be sure to pass on your kind words to him. We look forward to welcoming you back again on your next trip!
The views were amazing! Did the village tour option, absolutely lovely experience. The drive seemed super long, but nothing too crazy cause the road was bad and our guide literally couldn’t go any faster.
Thank you so much for the lovely review, I am so glad you enjoyed it. The scenery along the road is some of the best in the area and I always love the fact that you get to see many parts of the mountain range you'd never be able to see on foot.
OMG! What a fantastic day in Lesotho with Roof of Africa Tours! I am gobsmacked by the beauty & history but also the promise of their future! Our guide, Mondli (or Mo) was top notch A++ 110% awesome! His knowledge of the local area of Underberg & Himeville along with his extensive insight on Lesotho & its people was so insightful. Even fauna & flora. So happy & helpful. The tour was tastefully done & opened up another world with visits to a local village including songs & crafts, sheep shearing station, bread / beer hut & delicious homemade lunch by the river. Cannot fault. Heartfelt thanks to Mo, Emile & Sandile for making it happen after a mishap with dual-citizenship passports….be sure to take the one stamped! Phew! Lesson learned! But WOW…a must do day trip…wish we had more time to enjoy & explore! It was truly a memory I will hold dear. Once again…TOP NOTCH! *****
Very knowledgeable guide. Peter was great. He had lots of experience and knowledge to share and made the journey and memorable one.
The tour was great! The views were beautifully scenic. We passed through a smaller town and experienced a performance of Basotho women in a village. Our guide Mondli (or Moe) clearly explained the region's history and geography. We enjoyed him pointing out the flora and fauna along the way. We are especially impressed by his knowledge and bird spotting ability where he points out local and interesting species that we would have definitely missed.
We were exploring the Sanipass and Lesotho with our guide Sandile. We had an excellent time with him and another couple. He told a lot about nature, fauna and culture and was also interested in our culture in Europe. We had a beautiful weather to see magnificent views. Sandile was an experienced driver. We loved to do this tour with Roof af Africa!
Thank you so much for this wonderful review, Sandile is an awesome guide!
Our very nice guide could tell us a lot about the nature and the culture of both South Africa and Lesotho. During the tour he always made an effort to explain and show us the animals and nature of the sani pass. He payed a lot of attention to our personal interests and adapted the tour accordingly. We arrived in Lesotho smoothly due to his safe driving and preparations for the border control. In Lesotho we visited the highest pub in Africa and a village, where we learned a lot about their culture and enjoyed the great view of the Drakensberg. Our guide was also very flexible with our dietary requirements and prepared a delicious vegetarian lunch for us.
We had a lovely time and we learned a lot about Lesotho. Our guide knew a lot about the sani pass, the country, the animals and the nature. Overall 10/10!
Thank you very much for this amazing review, we're so glad you enjoyed your day trip into Lesotho.
Beautiful land; beautiful people. Husband arranged the Tour which started on time as Mondli picked us up from our accomodation, at the furthest, most remote address in Underberg. Warmed to Mondli straight away and this continued as the day progressed. Knowledge of the area, of driving the pass, settling us into each part of this adventure -.wonderful. We stopped to enjoy the views and learned a lot about this land. Passport control was dealt with efficiently and we journeyed to the Highest Pub in Africa. Good toilets/facilities and the aroma of pizza welcomed us. The journey on into Lesotho included visits to two villages In the first, we had songs and dancing and got to know the residents. In the second, John sampled the locally brewed beer. We had a nice picnic lunch, cold drinks and a second cup of coffee. We dropped into the pub again, this time for drinks. Mondli was a wonderful guide. He helped us out as we had lost our travel adaptor, and kindly stopped on the way back so we could buy essentials- everything needed for a braii. He was a brilliant representative for his community and an incredibly nice and intelligent person. John enjoyed their conversation. I would recommend this trip to anyone and would do it again anytime.
Thank you so much for this incredible review, it was a pleasure hosting you both, and I have already let Mondli know about his 5 star review - he is an excellent guide!
