Kyoto Family Kitchen Home Cooking Class

Description
You found the best experience in Kyoto for families! Come visit our home and let's have an every day home-cooked meal together. When you arrive, take a load off, drink some tea, and let's chat about your trip. We will segue into food talk and then we will preview the food that we will cook together that night. After that, we'll put aprons on and gather around the kitchen counter to slice, dice, and mix up the dishes. You will learn about the staples that we have from which most Japanese dishes can be made. We are a busy family, but we are foodies and love to open our doors to the world. So as long as you are ok with coming over to a family home and making a meal with the kids, the cat, and the dog, let's enjoy the time together. We open our home and hearts to you, in a setting where kids, pets, and adults can relax, eat, and talk together. Step into our house on the hill and become a part of our family for the day.

I recently had the pleasure of sharing a lovely meal with this local Kyoto family. Anthony and Naomi, their kids, and their friend welcomed me into their beautiful home in a residential area in north Kyoto. It felt like an oasis of calm after the hustle and bustle of both Tokyo and Kyoto. I had the chance to help with some of the dishes, and everything was absolutely delicious. But the best part was sitting around the dinner table, talking and laughing, and learning about day-to-day life in Japan. It was one of the best things I did on this trip.
Thank you so much for spending the evening with us! We loved having you over and are so happy that our little corner of north Kyoto felt like a peaceful break from the excitement of your travels. We’re glad you enjoyed the food and helping out in the kitchen, but what really makes us smile is hearing that you enjoyed the time around the dinner table. Sharing stories, laughter, and everyday life is our favorite part of these evenings too. Thank you for being such wonderful company. It honestly felt less like hosting a guest and more like sharing dinner with a friend. We hope the memories—and maybe a few of the recipes—stay with you long after your trip is over. Warmly, Anthony, Naomi & Family
Had a super time with Anthony and his family learning to cook Japanese food. My 13 and 10 year old thought it one of the highlights of the trip.
Thank you so much for your kind review! We’re delighted to hear that your family had such a great time with us and that the cooking experience was one of the highlights of your trip. It was wonderful cooking together and sharing a little slice of everyday life in Japan with you. We’re especially happy to hear that your 13- and 10-year-olds enjoyed the experience as much as the adults. Creating memories that the whole family can enjoy together is one of our favorite parts of hosting. We hope you’ll have fun recreating some Japanese dishes at home and remembering your evening in Kyoto. Warm regards, Anthony, Naomi & Family
We had a fantastic evening at Naomi and Anthony's house where we got to cook Japanese omelets, make gyoza, chicken teriyaki, etc. It was fun to visit a Japanese home and learn about Japanese culture and traditions. The food was super delicious and we really had a great evening. A fun way to meet people from different parts of the world and cultures.
Thank you so much for your kind words—we’re really happy to hear the evening was one of your best meals in Japan. We loved cooking together and sharing that relaxed time around the table with you. We’re especially glad you enjoyed making the gyoza—they’re always a favorite and such a fun part of the experience. It was a pleasure having you in our home and being part of your trip. We hope you’ll try the recipes again in Sweden and think back on the evening with us. We’d love to welcome you again anytime. Warm regards, Anthony, Naomi & Family
This was one of our family’s favorite experiences during our three and a half weeks in Japan. Two things made it special. First, the food was delicious! It was fun to help prepare the dishes and learn how to cook Japanese style. We were pleasantly surprised to receive the recipes the next day, so now we can try to cook them on our own. We fell in love with Japanese food on our trip, and I am anxious to add some Japanese recipes to my dinner rotation. Second, it was fun to spend an evening with a Japanese family in their home. They were so friendly and gracious and easy to be with. We were able to ask them questions and learn about family life in Japan. Good food is easy to find in Japan, but this experience was so much more than dinner in a restaurant. Along with a great meal, we had a fun and relaxing evening with a lovely family.
Thank you so much for such a heartfelt review. It really means a lot to hear that your evening with us stood out during such a long and memorable trip through Japan. We’re so glad you enjoyed both sides of the experience—the cooking and the time spent together. Hearing that you’re excited to bring Japanese dishes into your own kitchen is one of the best compliments we could receive. That’s exactly what we hope for. It was truly a pleasure having your family in our home. We loved the conversation, your curiosity, and the time we shared around the table. Thank you for recognizing what we’re trying to create here—it’s more than just a meal for us as well. Wishing you many great meals ahead, and we hope our paths cross again someday. Warm regards, Anthony, Naomi & Family
This at-home cooking class was a really welcome change from eating at restaurants in the middle of our trip. The family was kind, welcoming, and easy to talk to, which made the whole experience feel relaxed and personal. We enjoyed helping with some of the basic prep and cooking, but especially loved learning about the techniques and tools they use so we can try them at home ourselves. Their home is warm and inviting and located in a lovely neighborhood, which added to the overall experience. We would highly recommend this to anyone looking for something a little different and memorable!
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and generous review! We’re really happy to hear the class gave you a refreshing break from restaurant dining and added something personal to your trip. It was a pleasure having you in our kitchen—we appreciated your curiosity and the way you jumped into the cooking with us. It means a lot that you noticed the little details, from the tools and techniques to the feel of our neighborhood. We always hope guests leave not just full, but inspired to bring a bit of the experience back home with them. Wishing you many delicious meals ahead, and we’d love to welcome you again anytime you’re back in Kyoto! Warmly, Anthony, Naomi & family
We had an amazing experience with this cooking class! We have done this around the world, but this one was so unique as we were literally in their home and felt so comfortable. We are so excited to try our new recipes at home
Thank you so much for your wonderful message! It means a lot to hear that, even after doing classes around the world, this one stood out. Welcoming guests into our home is something we love, and we’re so glad you felt comfortable and connected. We hope the recipes bring back good memories and add something special to your meals back home. You’re always welcome back if your travels bring you to Kyoto again! Warmly, Anthony, Naomi & family
My girlfriend and I had an excellent time doing the dinner experience at Kyoto Family Kitchen. Anthony and his family were wonderful hosts -- We really enjoyed chatting wit the entire family throughout the evening. It was also a very hands-on cooking experience, which we loved. I highly recommend and would give our overall experience a 10/10!
Thank you so much for joining us and for your kind words! It was a real pleasure having you both in our kitchen—we loved your energy and the way you jumped right into the cooking. Conversations around the table with you felt easy and natural, and it made the whole evening really enjoyable for us too. We’re so glad the experience hit the mark for you. Wishing you both all the best, and if you’re ever back in Kyoto, we’d be happy to welcome you again! Warmly, Anthony, Naomi & family
First visit to Japan and I wanted to try an authentic Japanese cooking class. This fit the bill perfectly. It was much more personal and “real” than it would have been in a corporate setting. We got to join Anthony & Naomi’s family to try cooking real, regular Japanese food in their home. They guided us through quite a few recipes as we helped prepare a delicious feast for supper. We added on the gyoza and I was glad we did – they were my favorite! We were stuffed! We also got to learn about what it’s like to live in Japan and met their children & dog & non-allergenic cat. (My daughter is allergic to cats and she did not react at all.) We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and would highly recommend this class. Check out their website at kyotofamilykitchen.com
Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a thoughtful review! We’re really glad your first trip to Japan included a visit to our kitchen—it was a joy having you. It means a lot to hear that the experience felt personal and genuine. That’s what we aim for: sharing not just food, but a little slice of everyday life here in Kyoto. We loved cooking with you, and we’re thrilled the gyoza hit the spot—they’re a favorite in our house too! And we’re so glad to hear your daughter was comfortable around our cat—he’s a mellow guy and happy to have made a good impression. Thanks again for spending the evening with us and for sharing our website. You’re always welcome back if your travels bring you this way again! Warmly, Anthony, Naomi & family kyotofamilykitchen.com
We had a wonderful time cooking with Anthony and his family! They are warm, kind people, and it’s fascinating to talk with them about their experiences in Japan. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your lovely message! We truly enjoyed spending time with you in the kitchen and around the table. It was a pleasure to share stories and connect over food—we’re always grateful for the chance to meet such thoughtful guests. Wishing you all the best, and you’re always welcome back if your travels bring you to Kyoto again! Warmly, Anthony & family
A very welcoming home. The setup was casual and worked well. The food and conversation were terrific. We all enjoyed it very much. We look forward to trying the recipes at home. This is a bit out of town, but easy to get to by bus. It was nice walk through a more quiet neighborhood at sunset.
Thank you for coming and for sharing such kind words. We’re lucky to enjoy that quiet walk and mountain view every day, and it means a lot to be able to share it with new people. Hosting you reminded us not to take it for granted. We’re really glad you enjoyed the food and conversation—those are our favorite parts too. Hope the recipes serve you well back home, and if you’re ever in Kyoto again, the door’s open. Warmly, Anthony & Naomi
