Kumihimo Workshop at a 370 Year Old Braiding Shop in Tokyo

Description
We are a traditional braiding company established in 1652 in Tokyo, Japan. We specialises in a Japanese craft technique called Kumihimo which was traditionally used extensively in Japanese garments and accessories such as imperial court costumes, sword knots and sash bands for kimono. For many years, we have been privileged to serve imperial family and been responsible for re-production of national treasure pieces in museums. As a company with a history and a desire to preserve the craftsmanship for future generations, we handmake all, from spinning silk threads to dying and braiding, and maintain the very highest standards of quality. We will allow visitors to experience the essence of Japan's traditional crafts by viewing historical kumihimo archives and watching demonstrations by artisans to observe the kumihimo production process.

We had an amazing experience learning about kumihimo! You get a brief history lesson to understand the origins and importance of this craft, and then you get to the hands-on workshop. To finish off the experience, you are served match and a snack! The space is nicely air conditioned, very clean, and has a relaxing feel. Our teacher, Yuki, was incredibly engaging and enthusiastic. Her English was great. We had no trouble understanding her instructions. We are super happy with the bracelets we made during the workshop.
This was an amazing visit to the Kumihimo Workshop. The instructor was amazing and we made silk braid for key rings, and also enjoyed a light snack. Would highly recommend.
This was such a unique and wonderful experience. My friends and I had such a lovely time learning about the origins of kumihimo braiding, then having the opportunity to make your own was so special. I would highly recommend this to anyone. A huge thank you to the staff
Great experience in a very cool space. The guide was very friendly and made it easy to learn. Loved the lounge in the basement
