Chinese fishing nets (Cheena vala) are a type of stationary lift net in India. They are fishing nets that are fixed land installations for fishing. While commonly known as "Chinese fishing nets" in India, the more formal name for such nets is "shore operated lift nets". Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20 m or more across. Each structure is at least 10 m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end. Each installation is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. While such nets are used throughout coastal southern China and Indochina, in India they are mostly found in the Indian cities of Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a tourist attraction. This way of fishing is unusual in India and almost unique to the area, as it was introduced by Chinese explorers who landed there in the 14th century.

Hussain is the man! Highly recommended!!

I had a fantastic experience with Hussain during my time in Kochi. From the start, it was obvious that he genuinely cared about helping people rather than just doing another fare. One thing that really stood out was when my phone wasn’t working due to me having a Sri Lankan SIM card and I couldn’t pay for my uber from the airport to my hotel. Without me even asking, Hussain paid for my Uber, saying I could pay him back whenever. It’s a small act, but it says a lot about the kind of person he is. He also took me to get a local SIM card from a trustworthy shop at a fair price, making sure I wasn’t overcharged or taken advantage of as a visitor. What I appreciated most was that there was never any pressure to spend money. He wasn’t trying to steer me towards expensive shops or tourist traps or make extra commission. Instead, he was genuinely interested in making sure I had a good experience in Kerala. Along the way he shared recommendations, answered my questions about local life, and spoke with real pride about Kochi and the wider state. It’s rare to meet someone who is so honest, helpful, and welcoming. If you need a driver in Kochi, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Hussain. He goes far beyond simply getting you from A to B, and thanks to his kindness my first experience in Kerala got off to the best possible start.

Amazing tuk tuk tour

We had an amazing tour through the fort Kochi area with I. M. Haneef. He is a super hood driver and photographer and told us very many interesting things about the spots we passed by. I highly recommend taking a tour with him to get an overview of all the different places and things to do here, aswell as a nice introduction to Kochis history.
