Description
When the high priestess Kuiapoiwa II became pregnant she had a strange craving. Unlike the mothers of today, she didn't desire pickles and ice cream, but instead hungered for the eyes of sharks. The ruling chief Alapainui of the Big Island gathered kahunas, priests of traditional Hawaiian religion, to explain what this meant. They prophesied that the child would be as ravenous as a shark on land. Alapainui sought to destroy the baby at birth, but the chlild was ultimately rescued by family friends. The child would grow up to become King Kamehameha, the conquerer who defeated all the island chiefs and united Hawaii under his rule. This is just one of many curious tales from Kailua-Kona, a stunningly beautiful town, still overflowing with spirits and supernatural creatures from its mystical past. If you desire to know history of Kona then this is the tour for you. Not so much a ghost tour from previous experiences but informative
A genuinely fun experience. Our guide Heather was very personable and had a wealth of knowledge about the local beliefs and traditions. Hearing the stories in this tour is the difference between "cool scenery" and understanding the significance of the history of the places.
Unfortunately, I can’t recommend this outing to others. Our guide had a few stories but there wasn’t anything too insightful or exceptionally detailed. There was one story about some mysterious deaths but nothing to do with the area we were in. She hadn’t even ever gone into the summer palace museum so couldn’t tell us anything about what we could expect in there as it was closed when we arrived. The tour only ended up being an hour. Overall our guide was nice and it wasn’t completely and hour wasted but I wouldn’t want others to be as disappointed as we were with the experience.

Pleasant walking tour, lots of stories. Trish was our guide, highly recommend her for your tour. Try to do the afternoon tour for a great view of the sunset.

Our guide Heather did a phenomenal job taking us through several locations in downtown Kona. Very personable. She was very knowledgeable while telling us local stories and informing us of the cultural significance of things. Highly suggest this tour if you are interested in learning more of the history around Hawaii!

Other participants had cancelled so just the 2 of us had a private tour. We enjoyed learning several origin stories about the local area in Kona. Trisha (?) was very knowledgeable and quite the story teller. At the start of the tour she asked if there was someplace we had to be since she sometimes runs long. She also asked what our interest was and we confessed we were not believers of the paranormal. We had selected the tour because there really wasn't much to choose from. So she adapted the tour to downplay the paranormal. We did walk into some areas that yielded numerous bug bites so try to keep your ankles and arms covered if you go. All told, we enjoyed the tour, but wished it had been only 90 minutes long. But we had been asked and warned about the time frame, so our own fault. Our guide was great!!

The guide did not show up at meeting place at the set time and place! I called and they said he had an emergency and had to cancel! He did not inform me! I asked for and was granted refund but still had to pay $30 for parking!
