Historic Ybor City Food and Culture Walking Tour

José Martí Park is a small but deeply meaningful historic site in the heart of Ybor City. The park is dedicated to Cuban writer, revolutionary leader, and national hero José Martí, who played a key role in Cuba’s fight for independence from Spain. The land itself is considered Cuban soil and serves as a symbolic connection between Cuba and the Cuban immigrant community that helped build Ybor City. Today the park features a statue of Martí and historic markers honoring his legacy and the neighborhood’s Cuban heritage.

The Italian Club of Tampa was established by Italian immigrants who came to Ybor City during the cigar manufacturing boom. Built in 1918, the club became the center of Italian cultural life in the neighborhood, hosting celebrations, community gatherings, and social events that preserved traditions brought from Italy.

Guests will visit the Ybor Factory Complex. It stands on the site of Vicente Martinez Ybor’s original cigar factory built in 1886. This factory helped establish Ybor City as the “Cigar Capital of the World,” employing thousands of cigar workers who helped transform the area into one of the most diverse immigrant communities in Florida.

Centennial Park sits at the heart of Ybor City and serves as a central gathering place surrounded by historic buildings and local businesses. The park honors the neighborhood’s immigrant heritage and provides a space where visitors can experience the culture, history, and lively atmosphere that define Ybor City.

The Cuban Club is one of Ybor City’s most recognizable historic landmarks and a symbol of the Cuban immigrant community that helped shape the neighborhood. Founded in 1902, the club served as a mutual aid society providing healthcare, education, and social support to Cuban cigar workers and their families. The grand building hosted theater performances, community gatherings, and cultural events that helped preserve Cuban traditions in Ybor City.

This is the meeting spot for the tour. The statue of Vicente Martinez Ybor honors the founder of Ybor City and the entrepreneur who helped transform Tampa into the Cigar Capital of the World. In the 1880s, Ybor moved his cigar manufacturing operations to Tampa and established the community that still bears his name. Today the statue stands as a tribute to the vision and industry that created one of Florida’s most historic neighborhoods.
