Curious to see but disappointed with the price

I was disappointed because I thought we were walking by boat in a string of caves with glowworms and I had seen pictures with boat but we got in a rubber boat that moved by the guide who pulls on a cable and makes 8 AR in the cave The show remains very curious to see but it was not what I thought The other cave is more classical with stalagmite and staclactite and as the name is not given in the program I thought it would be the one in stairs with glowworms but no it was a cave without glowworms and there are some in the Vercors in France more beautiful bcp

Kia ora, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback — we’re sorry to hear the experience wasn’t what you had expected. You joined the Spellbound Glowworm and Cave Tours Explorer Tour, which begins with a short van ride across a scenic limestone-studded farm before descending into the beautiful Mangawhitikau Gorge. From there, you enter the Glowworm Cave, where the highlight is the guided boat experience through the glowworm-lit sections. The boat is an inflatable vessel guided along a fixed line by the guide to ensure safety and to protect the cave environment, while allowing guests to quietly view the glowworms up close. The second part of the tour takes you along an ancient dry riverbed to Te Ana o Te Atua (Cave of the Spirit). This cave is known for its impressive limestone formations, fossils, and dramatic views up through the tomo (sinkholes) to the sky. It does not feature glowworms, as it focuses on the geological history of the cave system. We’re sorry if the structure of the tour wasn’t clearly understood beforehand, and we appreciate your feedback — it helps us improve how we communicate the experience to future guests. Thank you again for visiting with us and sharing your thoughts. Kind regards, Expedigo tours.

Great tour but be warned about TripAdvisor deceptive charging in the booking process

I joined the tour( which had started in Auckland) on the outskirts of Hamilton. This meant arranging transport to the pickup point and a longer wait because of traffic uncertainties. The drive and driver (Dean) were good, countryside beautiful. The viewing of the caves was well organised with different vehicles and helpful staff. The glow worms showed up well, the moa bones interesting and cave formations (stalactites, stalacmites etc ) explained. However these were not as spectacular in form and colours as I have seen in other limestone caves (eg. Tasmania). I would have given a higher rating for the tour except for the deceptive way that I was charged. This was not the fault of the company who ran the tour but rather was the way TripAdvisor made the booking. The cost of the tour was quoted as $172 NZD and I made the booking through TripAdvisor believing this to be the case. However at some point in the payment process this was changed to $171 but now in USD which meant I ended up paying $304NZD for a tour which should have cost me $172NZD. I have contacted TripAdvisor but they responded that it was my fault for not noticing the change in currency and did not offer any refund. Hence I urge any travellers making bookings through TripAdvisor to be very careful and watch out for currency changes.

Kia ora, Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed review — we really appreciate your feedback. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed the journey from Auckland, the scenic countryside, and that Dean provided a great experience along the way. It’s also wonderful to know the tour logistics, cave organisation, and glowworm viewing all worked smoothly, along with the highlights such as the moa bones and limestone formations. We do understand your comparison with other cave systems such as those in Tasmania — every limestone system is formed differently over time, so the features here can appear more subtle in contrast, even though they carry significant geological and cultural importance. Regarding your booking concern, we’re really sorry for the confusion. We do not handle any payments or currency processing directly — all bookings and payments are managed through Tripadvisor. Unfortunately, it appears the price was displayed in USD rather than NZD at checkout, and we completely understand how easy it is for this to be missed in the booking process. It’s something that can genuinely happen to anyone, and we’re sorry for the frustration this caused. We appreciate you flagging this, as it’s a helpful reminder for future travellers to double-check currency settings carefully before confirming bookings. Overall, we’re pleased you enjoyed the tour experience, and we thank you again for travelling with us and sharing your feedback so openly. Kind regards, Expedigo Tours
