Hakone Highlights

Kumiko was such a wonderful guide! She was very knowledgeable in showing me around the area. She met me in my hotel lobby and we took the trains together to Hakone. We saw the Open Air museum and did the Hakone Ropeway up to Owakudani valley. Even got several beautiful views of Mt Fuji. She graciously helped me get checked in at my ryokan as well. Thank you Kumiko!!

Wonderful Choshi ryokan, onsen, sauna, hospitality, and food

Our stay at Ashika-so from Nov 20-22, 2025 was wonderful. Four of us older adults, including my wife and I, stayed in the main building in what appeared to us as a recently renovated Japanese-style room with tatami mats. It fit the 4 of us very comfortably and we had a great view of the ocean as well. That room probably would fit 8 people quite comfortably as it had a double sink, a WC, safe, and TV and a 'lounging' space with 2 chairs to view the ocean, the beautiful sunrise and sunset. The hospitality by the owner and her daughter was outstanding and we felt very much at home. The sauna and onsen bath were great. The sauna was huge with places for about 10 people who could choose to lie down on the heated pebbles. The bath was also nicely done and was quite large. Two in our group took the sauna and bath twice a day and stayed in there for a long time! The food was very good, the dinner had so many dishes and it was hard to eat all of it. The breakfast also had a variety of dishes that prepared us for the busy days. The location of this ryokan is excellent, close to the train station, and the ocean, and if you choose to walk to the Inubosaki Lighthouse - great view from the top and a very nice museum - it is a wonderful less than 30-minute walk along the shoreline with the refreshing ocean breeze. You can also take a 4-minute taxi ride if you prefer. Taxis are not expensive and for us oldies we need one now and then. If you are driving they have a large parking lot. The ryokan is in a very quiet location. The Ashika-so website does not give this ryokan justice. The exterior shows a 'simple' ordinary ryokan but I was surprised how great it turned out to be. I understand there are a few detached private cottages where one can stay but we had no time to explore that part of the ryokan as we were too busy seeing the Choshi sites and eating great seafood. Try the Ichiyama Ikesu seafood restaurant which is a 10-min walk but be prepared to wait in line.

Mount Fuji and Japanese countryside with a wonderful local guide!

I really enjoyed getting into the countryside to see a different side of Japan. The mountain train and cabel car were fun things to do. I got lucky with the weather and had a spectacular view of Mount Fuji, it was breath taking! I would probably upgrade to a 4 star Ryokan if you can afford it as the decor in mine was rather jaded and definitely include the dinner option. I was annoyed with Japan Awaits for not warning me the Ryokan wouldn't be able to supply it if not pre-ordered and would have to schlepp it off back into town again to find something to eat! The real gem of this tour however was my guide Izumi. Izumi planned a route to fit in as much as possible of what I wanted to see. He was very fruendly, polite and incredibly helpful. When I arrived at the Ryokan (still exhausted from jet lag) and I couldn't get dinner he went above and beyond to help me. He long overstayed the time he had to in order to help me and thankfully was able to enlist the help of one of the owners (who was also incredibly generous with his time). If I was rating the trip just on Izumi, it would be 5 stars+.

Hakone Experience

Our guide Kazuo-San was very knowledgeable and experienced. He guided us from our hotel in Tokyo through to our Ryokan in Hakone. We enjoyed a full day and even got glimpses of Mt Fuji. The lunch was traditional and fantastic. We felt comfortable to travel out on our own the next day alone. Highly recommend
