For the Red Yao, their jet-black hair is a sacred symbol of longevity, wealth, and good fortune. Tradition dictates they cut their hair only once in their lives, at age 18, preserving the cut locks to wear in elaborate coiled hairstyles that indicate their social status. The village is a splash of vibrant color, with women dressed in distinctive crimson embroidered jackets.
