Travelers will watch a video and visit the Ananases greenhouses, to understand the entire process from its plantation. The history of Pineapple began in the 19th century, on the Island of São Miguel. The Portuguese discovered the fruit during the colonization of Brazil and brought it to the Azores, being cultivated in a greenhouse and treated as an ornamental plant for cultural experiment and botanical curiosity. Only later did they learn that pineapple was a tasty fruit with strong commercial value. In 1864, the first industrial greenhouse was built, with capacity for 800 plants. The evolution was such that shortly after, São Miguel Island already had 4,300 production greenhouses. At the beginning of the 20th century, Pineapple from the Azores, internationally known, began to be exported to countries such as England, Germany and Russia. After more than a century of commercialization in Europe, Ananás dos Açores was given the Designation of Origin Ananás dos Açores/S in 1996. Miguel was registered

A nice half day tour for cruise passengers

The island is much more than the port area. I enjoyed seeing the beautiful scenery of the countryside with our lovely tour guide, Carla.

Informative, knowledgeable, & real

Nothing like a tour with a local Azorian. We appreciated learning about history and culture as well as scenery. Our guide Dennis was enthusiastic and well informed.

8 travelers in a van was so much nicer than a large bus load of people. We could easily ask questions and hear the guide without wearing a whisper in our ear and around our neck. No big crowds for WC visits. Easier travel and parking. Less time loading and unloading. Very enjoyable tour. Highly recommend it!

The driver was very knowledgeable, personable, and friendly. We had a great time. Ask about the legend of the blue and green lake.

Memorable tour with knowledgeable guide

Because the van was full, the two of us got a “private” tour in our guide’s car. Not only was the scenery gorgeous, but Nuno (not sure if that’s correct) was a wealth of information, answering all of our questions. This is his home, and his love of it shines through. Highly recommend.

Exceptional tour

Very nice tour. Accompanied by an exceptional guide named Rui we were catapulted into the wonders of the place. If we had stayed longer I would have wanted Rui to see the rest of the island.

Nice guide Dennis, lots of fun facts. Answers all our questions. Friendly and helpful. The solution for us today, after our tour was cancelled at 6am this morning, due to broken down car.
