Itinerary

10 min

ENTRANCE - We will be able to sit down in the central nave and take a moment to enjoy the breathtaking view of the Gothic vaulted ceilings and the luminous choir. We will briefly introduce the history of Notre-Dame and its architectural plan, helping us understand how this masterpiece of Gothic design was conceived, built and how it evolved across centuries, an essential foundation for a meaningful and immersive visit.

10 min

PATH OF PROMISE - We will then follow the newly designed visitor itinerary inside Notre-Dame Cathedral, beginning along the northern side with the Path of Promise. This thoughtfully curated route introduces the chapels dedicated to the prophets and patriarchs of the Old Testament, forming a powerful narrative foundation within the cathedral’s spiritual and artistic programme. As we move through this sequence of chapels, we will explore the subtle dialogue between classical religious paintings and newly commissioned contemporary tapestries, created from the cartons of major 20th- and 21st-century artists.

10 min

SOUTHERN TRANSEPT - This is our favourite photo stop with the most impressive and dramatic perspective toward the magnificent Southern Rose Window, a masterpiece of Gothic stained glass dating back to the 13th century. We will take our time to admire this monumental composition, bathed in shifting light, and learn about some of the biblical references.

10 min

AXIAL CHAPELS & NEW RELIQUARY OF THE CROWN OF THORNS - As we continue along the ambulatory encircling the choir, the most sacred space within Notre-Dame Cathedral, we enter a series of axial chapels distinguished by their remarkably rich and unexpectedly vibrant decorative scheme. It is within this setting that we encounter one of the cathedral’s most revered treasures: the Holy Crown of Thorns. We will share its extraordinary journey through history, from its origins in the Passion of Christ to its arrival in Paris under King Louis IX, and its enduring significance as both a relic and a symbol of faith. We will also take time to closely observe the newly designed reliquary by Sylvain Dubuisson, a refined contemporary creation that dialogues with the Gothic setting.

10 min

NORTHERN TRANSEPT - Our journey continues to the Northern Transept, offering another remarkable photo opportunity, this time with a striking perspective onto the Northern Rose Window. Nearby stands the celebrated statue of the Virgin of the Pillar, often associated with symbols of piety and protection., one of the most beloved devotional figures within Notre-Dame Cathedral.

10 min

PATH OF PENTECOST - Last but not least, we make our way towards the exit of Notre-Dame Cathedral via the Portal of Sainte-Anne, following the Path of Pentecost. This final sequence invites us to reflect on the spread of the Christian message, embodied through figures of saints closely connected to the history and spiritual identity of Paris. As our interior guided tour draws to a close, a few carefully chosen surprises await, offering a final layer of discovery and delight. You will then have a moment to fully absorb the atmosphere of the cathedral at your own pace, before we step outside to continue our exploration of its extraordinary façades and architectural details.

30 min

WESTERN FACADE - This final part of our visit is devoted to the architectural splendour and rich symbolism of the western façade of Notre-Dame Cathedral, a monumental composition where theology, geometry, and sculpture come together in perfect harmony. We will also place the cathedral within its wider historical setting on the Île de la Cité, the very cradle of Paris, where the city first emerged over two millennia ago. This broader perspective allows us to understand Notre-Dame not only as a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, but as a living witness to the evolution of Paris itself. To conclude our visit, I will be delighted to assist you in capturing memorable photographs in front of the cathedral, and to answer any remaining questions you may have - ensuring a complete and meaningful perspective on this timeless monument.

A Memorable and Insightful Guided Tour

We had a wonderful tour with our guide Michelle. The explanations were clear, interesting, and full of rich content. We learned so many new things and hidden stories of Notre-Dame Cathedral that we would never have discovered by ourselves. She was also extremely friendly, patient, and welcoming throughout the visit. My friends and I were all very satisfied with the experience, and we would definitely love to join her other tours in the future. Highly recommended!

Fascinating Tour of the Notre Dame

Michelle was excellent! I was so impressed with seeing the workmanship and various talents that went into rehabilitating the cathedral. Michelle explained these events clearly and with the obvious passion she has for the cathedral. She told us of its history and its future. The audio headphones were a great help. I highly recommend this tour and Michelle.

Easter Monday at Notre Dame Cathedral with Michelle

We had a lovely visit with Michelle yesterday on Easter Monday. The line was long, as one would expect during Easter holidays. It was a real blessing to have the group reservation slot (we entered straight away) and the headsets so that we could hear her clearly throughout the tour, without interruption. This was the first time I went back to Notre-Dame since the fire, and it was definitely worth it having an expert guide to accompany the visit. Strongly recommend the experience!

Very special experience!!

Thank you Michelle for the guided tour! For someone who is not religious, I learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed our guided visit. I appreciated the passion and the knowledge of Michelle, her interesting background definitely enriched the tour. It was wonderful meeting the other travellers too - we were a small group of 4, instead of 15 as mentioned in the title of the tour, and it was very comfortable and felt intimate and very special.
