This was a wonderful tour! I am grateful for the entire experience. A few things I wish I had known ahead of time: 1. The tour guide did not speak English. ( I double checked that I had reserved an English-speaking tour.) He was very kind and patient with my minimal Spanish, but this did limit my ability to ask questions and understand instructions. There ARE people at the lodge that speak English, which is very helpful. But they did not accompany me on any of the tour days. 2. Both days of my tour, I was advised to wear long, light pants - bring multiple pairs. 3. You will also have to wear thick rain boots. Pack socks accordingly. All of that said, I highly recommend this tour! The accommodations are incredible and the guides are very knowledgable. Activities were adjusted in order to maximize the weather, the season, and the amount of people able to join. As a solo traveler, I was able to make a lot of friends and fully embrace the experience of the Amazon, without having to worry about food or housing or planning. With everything that is included, the price can't be beat. If you speak (even a little) Spanish - book this tour!
I have just got back from a fantastic 4 day stay (I bought an extra day) at the Grand Selva Lodge which kept me interested and entertained from the pick up in Tena to the taxi back. The well organised activities were fun and interesting, not too strenuous but could certainly set the heart racing for the daring, and the lodge located deep in the jungle a 45 minute drive from Tena was a comfortable place to relax between activities being set in lush surroundings with a pool, good food (fresh bread in the mornings and substantial Ecuadorian fare) and helpful pleasant staff. Karin and Robert (the owners) have fluent English (and other languages) and a depth of local knowledge and Junior, the local guide coped well with my bad Spanish and was an expert on the local flora and fauna and without him I would have missed so much. Although I was the only guest on some of the trips he and the other staff who also came along made me feel welcome, looked after and part of the group. Highlights for me were the Piranha Lagoon whare we also encountered woolly monkeys, floating down the Rio Arajuno in a rubber ring and the night walk near the lodge where we saw much wildlife including a tarantula, snakes nocturnal birds and of course the giant paiche arapaima. Thanks to all for a lovely time.
