Meeting
The gigantic steel equine statue mounted by Genghis Khan himself is the largest statue of an equestrian in the world. This 40 m tall statue is located on a hillside on the bank of the Tuul River in an area called Tsonjin Boldog and connected to capital Ulaanbaatar by 54 km paved road. Tsonjin Boldog was chosen according to the legend that Genghis Khan found a whip in this area. In Mongolia, people believe that man finding a whip is a sign of fortune, good destiny, and occasion. The statue faces east, the direction of Genghis Khan's birthplace, and the sunrise. If you stretch your eyes to the east, you will see a small statue of his mother greeting him.
Gorkhi terelj national park and we are going to hike the turtle rock
Turtle Rock, ”Melkhii Khad”, is a surprising granitic formation, 24 metres (79 feet) high, whose form reminds of a turtle. Its old name was Mungut Khad. Located at the foothills of a mountain covered of pines, this rocky formation is incontestably a photo opportunity while you’re on the road for Terelj. There, it’s possible to rent horses, and during the summer, you can also find souvenirs’ sellers. It’s a good starting point for a small walk (about one hour) that will lead you until the centre of meditation of Aryaval or in the most remote places of the park. If you move a few kilometres forward on the main road that leads to Terelj Village, you will also be able to see on your right the formation called ”the old man reading”.
t’s located within Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, about 10 kilometres (6,21 miles) from the entrance. From the turtle rock, you can make a pleasant hike (about 45 minutes). Located on the hillside of a mountain covered with larches and granite rock, Aryaval meditation centre will delight the travellers. To reach the temple, you will have to pass a small wooden bridge on which a sign tells: ”the bridge that leads beyond wisdom”. The main temple is dedicated to Kalachakra philosophy, ”wheel of time”. The temple contains a thangka representing the myth of the Shambhala (a thangka is a painting on cotton or silk; Shambhala is, according to Buddhist philosophy, a fabulous place hidden somewhere in Asia), a Kalachakra mandala, and other objects bound to this belief. On the ground floor of this building, you can admire a ”gallery of Buddhist philosophy”, with 220 original paintings of the artist Bayantsagaan representing the different belief and Buddhist philosophy.

This tour was pretty good. It ended up being 3 cars of us total (some thought it would’ve been better had they gotten a bus, but I think it would’ve taken longer to drop us off at the end). The statue was really cool. They offered activities there too: taking pictures in traditional dress, holding an eagle, doing archery, riding a camel, but I think the animal ones were sad and inhumane, so I would’ve preferred not doing that. Lunch was decent — they had a lot of vegetarian options. The activities in the national park were also cool. Climbing turtle rock was not for the faint of heart since it was somewhat steep rocks. Coming down was scary, but manageable. The free time at the temple was really cool. Beautiful views and paths to walk. I recommend this tour.
This was an AMAZING experience!! Our tour guide Baga was so bright and amazing! He knew so much and was happy to answer any questions we had. He also found my classes in the middle of the field after they fell off during horseback riding. Very, very grateful. We did so much without feeling like it was too much. I felt like we saw so much of the countryside and got a great historic background. The car ride was about an hour out of Ulaanbatar, but the scenery was so nice it was good. We went to the Chinggis Kahn museum, dressed in traditional clothing, climbing the statue, held a falcon, did archery, rode a camel, rode a horse, had traditional Mongolian food, went to a national park, climbed turtle rock, and went to a beautiful temple. I loved chatting with the other people on the tour. Everyone was so friendly. 10/10 trip.
Had a really wonderful experience. The guide was friendly, knowledgeable and engaging and the tour was well organized with sufficient time to enjoy our stops at the Chingis Khaan statue and Terelj Park. Highly recommended.
They pick you up at your hotel and drive you to the chiggis khan statue including all of the activities around their like bow and arrow shooting, dressing up like chiggis with photos, etc. Then you go to the national park and turtle rock. A good hike. Plus hiking at a monastery. A full day and very informative and entertaining. A good deal for one day.
I was extremely happy with this tour—it was one of the best tours I have ever taken! The day was packed with activities, yet the guides never rushed us or took any shortcuts. Every stop was given the time it deserved, and the itinerary was fully delivered. I was picked up from my hotel at 8:30 a.m. and returned at 6:30 p.m. Our group of 13 travelled in two cars and a minivan, which meant we had three guides looking after us throughout the day. All of them were knowledgeable, entertaining, and incredibly helpful. I was in one of the cars driven by Baga, who made the journey especially enjoyable. He constantly shared fascinating cultural and historical insights about Mongolia and kept us entertained with a carefully selected playlist of Russian, Indian, Mongolian, and American music, tailored to the nationalities of the passengers in the car. One of the highlights of the trip was the history lesson at the Chinggis Khan Statue Complex. It was packed with interesting historical facts and delivered in a way that was both educational and engaging. The guides went out of their way to make sure everyone enjoyed the activities, including archery, holding an eagle, and camel riding. They were also very patient in taking photos for everyone, ensuring we all left with great memories of the day. Lunch was delicious and featured a variety of traditional Mongolian dishes served family-style. I even had the opportunity to try yak meat for the first time. Climbing Turtle Rock and hiking to the monastery were a little challenging but highly rewarding and enjoyable experiences. To top it all off, the weather was beautiful throughout the entire day. I thoroughly enjoyed this tour and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Mongolia. One final point worth mentioning: everything was included in the advertised price. There were no hidden costs, and I didn't have to pay a single cent extra.
The guide speaks English very well. There were many topics and we had a good time. All activities and meals are included in the tour price, so there is no need to bring out your wallet except for souvenir purchases and tips. There was a pick-up service to and from the hotel and they picked me up in the hotel lobby. It was a great time, including on the move.
I arrived in Ulaanbaatar at 0200 and was up at 0700 for an 0800 tour. George picked me up from the hotel first then collected the rest of the crew. What a great tour. If you only have one day here do this tour. We met up with two of their groups from the same company and added Dean and Bagar. (Photo attached) the only thing I didn’t do was the camel ride as animal tourism is not really for me. Happy to pay for it as part of the package. The knowledge, and welcoming of the guides was amazing. Lunch was great and the statue is far more than just that. What makes a good tour a great tour is people. Everyone was really nice and the guides were fantastic.
Well worth the money. Great guides. All the extras you could want were included. Definitely a must if you have a day in UB
It contains little physical activity. But Drt is terelj park so no wonder. Otherwise it was good . Good with pick up and drop of . Both the guide Dean and the driver spoke good English.
This tour was amazing! Our guide was very knowledgeable about Mongolia’s history, spoke great English, and knew where to take all the best photos. The driver navigated the traffic and bumpy road very well. I definitely recommend this tour to anyone looking to see the highlights near Ulaanbaatar!
