Itinerary

15 min

This tourist center designed by Kengo Kuma is not just a valuable source of sightseeing information, but one of Asakusa’s newest sightseeing attractions. This 8-story building, designed by a world famous Japanese architect, has a very striking structure with the appearance of a stack of separate wooden buildings that seem piled up on top of each other at different angles. From the open terrace Observation Deck on the 8th floor of the Center, we will have a preview of the entire tour course: not just Tokyo Sky Tree and Asahi Flame we have just seen but the landmarks we are going to see including Kaminarimon gate, Nakamise shopping street, Hozomon gate, Sensoji Temple, and more.

20 min

When approaching Sensoji temple, visitors first enter through the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate), the outer gate of Sensoji Temple and the symbol of Asakusa and the entire city of Tokyo. A shopping street of over 200 meters, called Nakamise, leads from the outer gate to the temple's second gate, the Hozomon. Alongside typical Japanese souvenirs such as yukata and folding fans, various traditional local snacks from the Asakusa area are sold along the Nakamise. The shopping street has a history of several centuries.

20 min

Sensoji (浅草寺, Sensōji, also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple) is a Buddhist temple located in Asakusa. It is one of Tokyo's most colorful and popular temples. The legend says that in the year 628, two brothers fished a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, out of the Sumida River, and even though they put the statue back into the river, it always returned to them. Consequently, Sensoji was built nearby for the goddess of Kannon. The temple was completed in 645, making it Tokyo's oldest temple.

15 min

Sumida Park is located near Asakusa station and along the Sumida River where you can see amazing views such as Tokyo Skytree. Especially you can see beautiful scenery at the season of cherry blossoms. The park is open space and it is very fun to walk around. It has landing places for popular waterbuses that tour the Sumida River and Tokyo Bay. The park is a part of Sumida River Terrace that is a promenade built along the Sumida River.

20 min

Shibuya Crossing near the Shibuya Station is crossed by as many as 500,000 people per day, and at a peak time, as many as 3,000 people cross at one green light! For Japanese who are used to seeing this view is nothing to be surprised about, but tourists seem to be marveled that everyone manages to cross without bumping into each other. There are always people going to the spot just to see this crossing. Along with New York’s Times Square, Shibuya Crossing is one of the “most famous crossings in the world.”

25 min

Its location between two of Tokyo’s biggest shopping districts, Harajuku and Shibuya, makes it an ideal catwalk for fabulous 20- and 30-something trendsetters. The half-mile long street is lined with stores ranging from vintage shops and local designer clothing to upscale boutiques and high-end international brands.

50 min

Meiji Shrine (明治神宮, Meiji Jingū) is a shrine dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his consort, Empress Shoken. Located just beside the JR Yamanote Line's busy Harajuku Station, Meiji Shrine and the adjacent Yoyogi Park make up a large forested area within the densely built-up city. The spacious shrine grounds offer walking paths that are great for a relaxing stroll.

20 min

Omotesando is a sloping tree-lined boulevard in Tokyo's fashionable Aoyama district that goes through parts of both Shibuya and Minato wards. The Harajuku area, which Omotesando is often considered a part of, has its own distinctive brand of youth fashion. On the other hand, Omotesando itself caters to the haute couture end of the spectrum, with plenty of places to sit back and relax over good food and drink, and take in the cutting edge architecture that typifies many of the establishments here.

Thoughtful and Accessible Tokyo Experience

Yuki was fantastic. She communicated with us the day before the trip, and the company also reached out a few days in advance. She picked us up from our hotel, and we set off by train with two family members who had mobility challenges: one using a wheelchair and the other using a walker. Throughout the tour, Yuki regularly checked in to see how we were doing, when we wanted to eat, and whether we wanted to make any changes to the itinerary. She handled all of the train costs and took many photos that we were able to download later. We would recommend Yuki in a heartbeat.

Terrific Tokyo Tour

Keita (K) was wonderful! He was very cognizant of making sure of my ability to travel and see all the locations. I was especially impressed with his working with trainsubway personnel for access. As a side note the train/subway system is amazing. Lunch was incredible. K provided great history and cultural throughout our time together. It wonderful having K make sure we had the best photo opps everywhere we went. K went over and above after seeing we had another tour scheduled in Osaka and contacted his counterpart to let them know what our particular interests are. We started with a great tour guide and finished with a friend. Highly recommended this tour and Keita as your guide. Thank you.

A wonderful day

It was our first time in Tokyo and our first time vacationing with a wheelchair and Masaharu Kai guided us through the must see attractions and subway stations with confident ease. Not only did we see some amazing places and stopped at culturally significant food stalls and tempura restaurant, but we left the day with all the information and confidence we need to continue exploring the city on our own for the remainder of our stay. A fantastic experience, a well planned and paced day, an incredible guide and sunny weather, couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

Enjoyable day tour for wheelchair users

Wonderful day out with a very kind, friendly, patient, and helpful guide. We managed to have really good tempura lunch at a local Japanese restaurant and see a lot of the famous sights. Also got to try the local trains! When we wanted to buy some good coffee, he was knowledgeable and brought us to a couple of great shops! Recommended for wheelchair users. The guide (Masaharu Kai) kindly offered to help push the wheelchair, even though it was outside his job scope to do so! Highly recommended.

Best Limited Mobility Tour EVER!

Masaharu Kai is one of the best walking tour guides my husband and I have ever had—and we travel often! This was truly an outstanding experience. I have limited mobility, which usually makes standard walking tours difficult. Masaharu made everything easy and enjoyable. His extensive knowledge of Japan’s history and culture, combined with his attention to accessibility, made this tour exceptional. Every site we visited was wheelchair- or rollator walker-friendly, which is what Japan calls “barrier-free.” We moved at the perfect pace, navigated trains effortlessly, and Masaharu knew exactly where to find elevators and accessible routes at temples and shrines. I never felt rushed or excluded. Each stop was full of surprises, delicious food, and fascinating history. If you have limited mobility, I strongly recommend booking a tour with Masaharu Kai. He goes above and beyond to ensure everyone has an unforgettable experience!

Operator response

We’re delighted to hear that Masaharu made your tour both accessible and enjoyable, and that his knowledge and care helped create such a memorable experience. Your kind words about his attention to barrier-free routes and his guidance mean a great deal, and we’ll be sure to share them with him. We truly appreciate your recommendation and hope to welcome you again on another tour in the future! Best regards, Kyoko
