Chinese fishing nets(Cheena vala)are a type of stationary lift net in India. They are fishing nets that are fixed land installations for fishing. While commonly known as Chinese fishing nets in India, the more formal name for such nets is shore operated lift nets. Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20m or more across. Each structure is at least 10m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end which is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. While such nets are used throughout coastal southern China and Indochina, in India they are mostly found in the Indian cities of Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a tourist attraction. This way of fishing is unusual in India and almost unique to the area, as it was introduced by Chinese explorers who landed there in the 14th century. Indeed, one interpretation of city name Kochi is ‘co-chin', meaning like China

Private Full Day Tuk Tuk Tour

The drivers were very friendly and helpful. They took our heavy suitcases up to the third floor, where there was no elevator, even after we got out of the tuk-tuk. That was a big help.

He took us to some great spots and explained the history and culture in a clear charming way. His English was amazing. We felt very looked after and I would not hesitate recommending Shuhaib to other travellers.

A fun way to explore Fort Kochi

Travelling about in a Tuk Tuk is a really fun way to get around Fort Kochi. My driver and guide for the day was Shuhaib who was excellent. The itinerary was interesting and varied and he was really knowledgeable about the sites and the area in general. He was very professional, funny, easy to talk to, and made sure the whole trip was really enjoyable. Not just sightseeing though as Shuhaib suggested some great local food to try, as well as stops for delicious chai and lassi. I would definitely recommend this experience.

Nasru Made Our Kochi Visit Unforgettable

Nasru was our tour guide, and from start to finish he was absolutely outstanding — we honestly could not fault him in any way. His flexibility, professionalism, and genuine care immediately set him apart. When we contacted him the day before our tour to explain that all passengers had to be back on the ship two hours earlier than expected, he didn’t hesitate for a second. Nasru instantly rearranged the schedule, agreed to an earlier pickup, and confidently reassured us that we would still see everything planned — and even more. The next morning, he exceeded expectations yet again by arriving earlier than agreed and messaging to let us know he was outside and ready whenever we were. That level of thoughtfulness and consideration perfectly set the tone for what turned out to be an exceptional and unforgettable day. Nasru’s knowledge is incredible, and his English is excellent, making the tour not only informative but truly engaging and interactive. Add to that his fantastic sense of humor, and the entire experience was both educational and great fun. We visited every location on the itinerary and were delighted with additional unexpected stops, including a fascinating perfume shop boasting the world’s largest perfume bottle and incense stick. Nasru genuinely goes above and beyond. He even helped us track down red curry powder on behalf of a friend — something completely outside the scope of the tour. On top of that, his photography skills are excellent, and he made sure we had beautiful photos of ourselves with stunning backdrops throughout the day. Out of all the places we visited on our trip, Kochi stands out the most — entirely because of the incredible experience we had with Nasru. He turned our visit into a truly special memory, and we cannot recommend him highly enough. If you’re looking for a guide who is professional, knowledgeable, fun, and genuinely invested in giving you the best possible experience, Nasru is the one to book!
