If you’ve already seen Tokyo’s famous landmarks and want to experience the city’s quieter soul, this tour is exceptional. Shino is an outstanding guide—warm, incredibly knowledgeable, and deeply passionate about Japanese history, culture, and daily life. Rather than simply pointing out landmarks, she shares the stories behind them, weaving together history, religion, architecture, and modern Japanese culture in a way that makes every stop meaningful. Walking through Monzennakacho and Tsukishima also offered a completely different perspective on Tokyo—peaceful neighborhoods where history quietly coexists with everyday life. I especially appreciated that this wasn’t a scripted tour. Shino encouraged conversation, answered every question thoughtfully, and even helped me practice my Japanese. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and by the end of the tour I felt less like a tourist and more like I had spent the afternoon exploring with a knowledgeable friend. This tour perfectly complemented Shino’s Yanaka Hidden Gems tour. Together they revealed sides of Tokyo that many visitors never experience. I enjoyed this experience so much that I’ll be returning to Japan in August with my son, and I hope we’ll have the opportunity to tour with Shino again. If you’re looking for an authentic, thoughtful, and memorable experience beyond the usual attractions, I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. It was one of the highlights of my entire trip to Japan.
This tour was excellent and Shino is an amazing guide! It was great to learn about a neighborhood that is off the beaten path. Shino did a great job answering all of our questions and leading us to some unique places. The fire ritual was a powerful cultural experience that left me awestruck and Shino did a great job helping us understand the importance of the ritual. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in learning about Tokyo.
Another fantastic tour with Shino! I did a walking tour with Shino in the Yanaka neighborhood of Tokyo, and I had such a wonderful time that I booked another tour with her (this one) several days later! Shino attends tours for locals in her own time, is a wealth of knowledge, and had answers to all of our questions. Her selection of locations, experiences, tips for enjoying Japan, and information/stories about history, culture, and daily life are so interesting, often humorous too, and things we would have never learned otherwise. Also, the temple fire and drumming ritual she took us to was a truly unique and incredible experience, and a perfect highlight at the end of two weeks in Japan. Shino was also so helpful between my two tours with her - answering my WhatsApp questions about Japanese phrases or food recommendations. I now have a friend in Japan. I can’t recommend this enough- go ahead and book your tour with Shino now!
My friends were visiting from the U.S., and we chose this tour because we had already seen the famous tourist spots. We looked for something unique, and this tour was exactly what we wanted. Shino took us to places we never would have discovered on our own. We had a fantastic time.
